Malibu Rising

- By Taylor Jenkins Reid

(Ballantine, $28) “Never has so much sex, tragedy, celebrity, and tanned skin been crammed into one thinking person’s beach read,” said Melissa Katsoulis in the Times

(U.K.). Taylor Jenkins Reid’s new novel revolves around a summer’s day in 1983 that will end with Malibu’s most-talked-about party of the season. But the hostess, model Nina Riva, and her three siblings are also haunted by a sad celebrity-family history that unfolds in flashbacks and explains the Rivas’ deep love for the ocean and loyalty to one another. Reid, the author of Daisy Jones & the Six, “serves melodrama on a daring scale,” and when the party’s champagne gives way to cocaine, things get really wild. “It’s not a spoiler to say that this will all end in a blaze,” said Stephanie Merry in The Washington Post. “No high— whether it be drug-fueled or geographic, at a party on a cliff above Point Dume—can last forever.”
