First prison sentence for Jan. 6 rioter
A federal judge sentenced
Paul Hodgkins to eight months in prison this week, the first person sentenced for a felony in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. A crane operator from Tampa, Hodgkins, 38, carried a Trump campaign flag into the Senate chamber, though he did not actively engage in violence. More than 500 rioters have been charged, and in an hours-long hearing in Washington, D.C., District Judge Randolph Moss weighed the impact that Hodgkins’ sentence would have on other punishments for other rioters. “This was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a protest,” Moss said. Prosecutors sought an 18-month term for Hodgkins, who pleaded guilty and apologized to the court, saying he now recognizes that Joe Biden was legitimately elected.
