Memorial for reporter: Thousands of people gathered in Amsterdam this week to mourn star crime reporter Peter R. de Vries, who died in the hospital eight days after being shot in the head. De Vries, 64, had been advising a witness in the highprofile trial of an alleged drug leader when he was shot five times outside a TV studio in central Amsterdam. Two suspected hit men have been charged with murder. A public service for de Vries was held at the Royal Theatre Carré, an Amsterdam opera house. Mourners filed past an exhibit detailing de Vries’ life and some of the major stories he broke during his two decades helming a popular Dutch investigative TV show. “He was our hero,” said one mourner. “He stood up for people who couldn’t do it themselves.”
