The Week’s guide to what’s worth watching
Tokyo Olympic Games
Nightly prime-time coverage of the Games will put a spotlight on U.S. swimmers on Monday, followed Tuesday by the women’s gymnastics team final, in which the heavily favored U.S. team will seek a third consecutive title. Simone Biles should be back on Thursday seeking to defend her title in the individual all-around competition, while Friday’s swimming finals will feature U.S. stars Katie Ledecky and Caeleb Dressel in their best events. Saturday belongs to tennis, as Naomi Osaka, playing for Japan, could face Wimbledon winner Ashleigh Barty. Prime-time network coverage begins at 8 p.m. nightly, NBC American Masters: Buddy Guy
Every guitar hero living owes a debt to Buddy Guy. Now 85, the Louisiana native arrived in Chicago in 1957 and quickly became the sideman of choice to such older pioneers as Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. This documentary portrait features plenty of the piercing solos that made Guy a polestar to Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, and other guitarists who eclipsed his fame. Carlos Santana, Gary Clark Jr., and others help explain Guy’s impact. Tuesday, July 27, at 9 p.m., PBS; check local listings Behind the Music
The backstories on music’s biggest acts were a VH1 staple for decades. Now the franchise that dug into the lurid details of many a star’s rise and fall has returned as a streaming series. Future episodes will check in on Jennifer Lopez, Huey Lewis, Duran Duran, and New Kids on the Block. The first two, arriving together, will spotlight Ricky Martin and LL Cool J. Available Thursday, July 29, Paramount+
The Wine Show
The dream tour of the world’s great wine regions continues. For Season 3, co-hosts Matthew Rhys, Matthew Goode, and James Purefoy are joined by fellow actor Dominic West as the group establishes temporary headquarters in Portugal’s Douro Valley and, guided by wine expert Joe Fattorini, begins sending envoys to New York City, the island of Madeira, and other fertile spots farther afield. Available Thursday, July 29, Acorn TV, Sundance Now, and AMC+
Myth & Mogul: John DeLorean
In the 1970s and ’80s, John DeLorean was the embodiment of an auto maverick. This threepart documentary expands on 2019’s excellent Framing John DeLorean by going deeper on DeLorean’s spectacular moves and scandals, from his decision to build a plant in Northern Ireland to his cocaine-trafficking arrest. The series benefits from previously unseen footage that was shot for a 1981 D.A. Pennebaker documentary. Available Friday, July 30, Netflix
