The 2022 Mercedes EQS: What the critics say

Mercedes-Benz took its time developing a long-range electric vehicle, “but the wait was worth it.” The German automaker’s first dedicated EV, due soon at U.S. dealers, is “like an S-Class but better,” beginning with its “cosseting” front seats and “buttery smooth” ride. The EQS was designed to go head-to-head with the Tesla Model S, and we were “duly impressed” with its performanc­e on twisty mountain roads. “There are few cars that can match this level of excellence, electric or otherwise.”

Except for the Tesla, which looks better inside and out and maintains edges in range, charging speed, and accelerati­on. In both its rear-drive and all-wheel-drive models, though, the heavier Mercedes does handle its luxury mission well, delivering a ride so majestic that it “makes a legacy S-Class feel like a coal-burning steamship.” Amenities include an automatic massage function, and an optional display screen spans the entire dash, “like the car has its own drive-in.”
