The Week’s guide to what’s worth watching
The Most Hated Man on the Internet
Even in an arena that breeds ugly behavior, Hunter Moore distinguished himself. In 2010, the high school dropout launched IsAnyoneUp .com, a revenge-porn site that gathered and posted explicit photos and videos of men and women without their consent. He met his match, though, when one angry mother made it her mission to bring him down. This three-part docuseries lets Moore’s nemesis and victims have the last word. Available Wednesday, July 27, Netflix
We Met in Virtual Reality
For better and for worse, a lot of life went virtual when Covid struck. This first-of-its-kind documentary explores the friendships and romantic relationships people have formed on virtual reality platforms in recent years by diving into those invented worlds. The film’s several subjects appear only in avatar form—which often means as fit, doe-eyed, idealized versions of themselves. But as they share their stories, there’s no denying that some of the connections they’ve made are genuine. Wednesday, July 27, at 9 p.m., HBO
The Resort
With no return bookings available for The White Lotus this summer, checking into The Resort might be the best alternative. Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs) and William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) co-star in this new dark comedy series as a couple who’ve hit a marriage lull when they arrange a 10th-anniversary getaway to the Mayan Riviera and wind up entangled in a mystery involving the disappearance years earlier of two young hotel guests. The tale’s weird twists all come from the mind of Palm Springs’ screenwriter. Available Thursday, July 28, Peacock
Paper Girls
It’s not Stranger Things, but this new adaptation of a comic-book series does mix sci-fi with nostalgia for the 1980s and kids who ride bikes. Riley Lai Nelet stars as one of four newspaper delivery girls who have just met when a storm sends them hurtling forward in time from 1988 to 2019. Our wired world is strange to them. But stranger is that their future selves live in 2019, and may be the kids’ best chance of escaping a time travelers’ war and returning home. Available Friday, July 29, Amazon Prime
Uncoupled
Any Neil Patrick Harris fan has to have wondered if How I Met Your Mother would have worked if Harris had played Barney Stinson as gay. Veteran hitmaker Darren Star provides an answer of sorts with this new series, which casts Harris as a 40-something Manhattan real estate broker whose longtime boyfriend has walked out, forcing a midlife return to the singles scene. Available Friday, July 29, Netflix
