It wasn’t all bad

-

■ Pitcher Kaiden Shelton was devastated when he accidentally struck a batter in the helmet during the Little League’s Southwest Regional Playoff last week. The batter, Isaiah Jarvis, brushed off the bruise and walked on to first base. But when he noticed Kaiden breaking down on the mound, shaken by his mistake, Isaiah gently approached Kaiden and wrapped his arms around him, telling him, “Hey, you’re doing great. Let’s go.” Kaiden’s teammates and coach joined Isaiah to embrace and comfort him, as the crowd erupted in applause.

■ Lifeguard Natalie Lucas’ late July shift at a Colorado YMCA took a jarring turn when a woman suddenly collapsed on the pool deck. The 18-year-old rushed over and discovered that the woman, Tessa Rider, was going into labor. As Rider’s husband helped her push, Lucas grabbed towels and a first-aid kit and asked other swimmers to call an ambulance. Minutes later, with Lucas supporting her head, Rider gave birth to Toby, a healthy baby boy who was breathing and crying well. “She really played her part perfectly,” Rider said. “I’m glad she had that experience with us.” Her husband agreed: “I would not have traded Natalie for anybody in that situation.”

■ For centuries, adventurers have tried to recover the lost treasure from a Spanish galleon, Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas, that sank in the Bahamas in 1656. When a private exploration company said it was conducting a new search, many experts thought it would come up empty-handed. Instead, the team discovered gold, coins, and jewelry across an 8-mile stretch of ocean floor—including a golden Cross of Santiago, linked to an order of knights founded in the 1100s. Rather than being sold to private collectors, the finds will soon be displayed at a new maritime museum in the Bahamas.
