The Week’s guide to what’s worth watching
Longest Third Date
An unplanned three-month tropical vacation could be a dream come true. For Khani Le and Matt Robertson, there wasn’t a choice. This new documentary chronicles how the pair met via a dating app and decided on a whim to book a five-day jaunt to Costa Rica for their third date. They arrived just as Covid lockdowns began, turning a quick escape into a 79-day stress test of their promising relationship. Available Tuesday, April 18, Netflix
The Diplomat
Keri Russell has gone from Soviet spy to a U.S. ambassador. Having wrapped The Americans after six seasons, Russell takes the lead in this new series about a no-nonsense diplomat who’s pulled away from an assignment in Afghanistan and named ambassador to the United Kingdom. It’ll take time for Russell’s Kate Wyler to get used to the show-pony demands of the post, but the real work will be in heading off a war in the Persian Gulf while her husband, an ex-ambassador himself, judges her every move. Rufus Sewell co-stars. Available Thursday, April 20, Netflix
Dead Ringers
What’s better than a series with Rachel Weisz playing lead? One that has her playing two leads. The actress is twice as terrific in this acidic, gender-swapped riff on David Cronenberg’s 1988 psychosexual horror classic. Weisz plays brilliant twin gynecologists who want to reshape the way women experience childbirth. But the sisters’ obsession with each other, their contrasting approaches to work, and their aggressive pursuit of various pleasures pull them apart as they push their research into ethically questionable territory. Available Friday, April 21, Amazon Prime
Dear Mama
Most documentaries about Tupac Shakur focus on the rapper’s death in a 1996 drive-by shooting. This one concentrates on Tupac’s relationship with his mother. Afeni Shakur, who joined the Black Panther Party at 21 and was jailed for two years before being acquitted of a bomb plot, struggled with drug addiction for years and often put activism above parenting. But she also made sure her son was well equipped to speak out. Available Friday, April 21, at 10 p.m., FX
Ghosted
Chris Evans probably doesn’t get ghosted very often. It’s a different story for his salt-of-the-earth character in this romantic comedy action thriller. Evans’ Cole thinks he has found the one until she no-shows a planned family introduction. After flying to London to find her, he learns that Ana de Armas’ Sadie is a superspy—and fully capable of rescuing him from the trouble he has stumbled into. Available Friday, April 21, Apple TV+
