The best of San Antonio: Dining on the River Walk

-

“No visit to San Antonio is complete without a leisurely stroll on the River Walk,” said Robin Soslow in the San Antonio Express-News. Of course, exploring the shops, museums, and landmarks along the 15 miles of meandering walkway is “sure to make you work up an appetite.” Luckily, there’s always a restaurant or bar nearby, most offering wonderful views and great people-watching. These are four of the best. Biga on the Banks Chef Bruce Auden elevated the city’s dining scene when he opened this “fine-dining gem” in 2000. It’s still the place to go for game, such as Lockhart quail or spiced Texas antelope, but it can also be counted on for such “playful twists” on new American cuisine as apple-smoked salmon chalupas. 203 S. Saint Mary’s St. Ocho “Harp music and flitting birds add to the charm” when you dine at Ocho, housed in a gorgeous glass conservatory that overlooks the Museum Reach spur of the River Walk. Cuban, Caribbean, South African, and Mediterranean flavors mingle on Jesse “Chef Kirk” Kuykendall’s menu. Think pistachio-crusted lamb with a chipotle honey sauce or achiote-spiced braised pork with sweet plantains. 1015 Navarro St. Boudro’s Every meal on this Texas bistro’s riverside patio is “a festival of colors and flavors.” Highlights of Danny Ibarra’s South Texas–meets–Gulf Coast menu include blackened prime rib and shrimp and grits with roasted poblanos. 421 E. Commerce St. The Esquire Tavern This landmark former speakeasy is the place to grab a drink on the River Walk. It features a 109-foot-long wood bar, an award-worthy cocktail program, and delicious pub fare, from a brisket melt to the fried apple pie. 155 E. Commerce St.
