Migrant tragedy: The bodies of eight Chinese migrants washed up on a Mexican beach last week, after their boat capsized during the perilous journey north toward the U.S. The seven women and one man had set off from Tapachula—near the Guatemalan border— and were sailing up the Pacific coast of Mexico to avoid migration checkpoints. One Chinese migrant survived; it’s not known what happened to the Mexican man who operated the boat. The number of Chinese migrants entering the U.S. from Mexico has surged in recent years: 37,000 were detained at the U.S.-Mexico border last year, 50 times the number two years earlier. Iris Wang, a Chinese migrant who took a boat up the coast in late 2022, told CNN that she almost died on the journey when a storm hit. “I never want to see the sea at night again,” she said.
