Avalon beach projects proposed

A beach at Lake Avalon could be open for summer 2018 — if the POA Board approves a proposal developed by General Manager Tom Judson. The cost of the project is $207, 701.

The beach was listed in the Property Owners Association Rejuvenation Plan, which was developed during the last assessment election. When the assessment didn’t pass, the beach and several other improvements were put on hold.

Judson said he has heard a lot of comments about the beach not going through.

The new plan adds a fee to use the beach. It would be the same fee as the outdoor pools at Kingsdale and Metfield. According to the 2017 fee schedule, an afternoon at the pools costs $2 for a member with a photo ID, $2.50 for a member with a paper ID and $2.75 for guests. There are season passes available for members priced at $40 with a photo ID and $55 with a paper ID. There is also a family season pass for $120 (photo ID) or $145.

The concession stand where admission is collected will also rent kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. Judson said the concessions will probably cover the cost of operating the beach.

The first portion of the project may be parking lot expansion, because money can be saved by doing the work along with a parking lot project planned for Branchwood.

The rest of the work will begin during the final quarter of 2017. The lake will be lowered so sand can be added on shore and out into the lake. The restrooms will

be renovated. A fence around the beach area, a gate for the parking lot and a beach volleyball court will be part of the project.

The board will vote on the plan at this week’s board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Judson presented two other capital projects at the work session which will also be voted on this week. First is the Branchwood parking lot expansion at the cost of about $50,000. Judson said the parking lot is too small for the current usage of the area, which includes a walking trail.

The building is also too small. Judson asked the board to approve $14,000 to begin a renovation. The first step is the architectural work to add a multipurpose room and renovate the lobby and locker rooms. Once the drawings are made, the costs of the project can be estimated. Currently, classes at Branchwood are taking place on the racket ball courts which are on the lower level of the building.
