Local author at library story time
A local author’s new children’s book is based on the true adventures of her own children and her parents. Sylvia Alderton grew up on a farm in northeast Missouri. A Bella Vista resident since 1994, this is her second children’s book.
“It’s an adventure book for boys,” she said. The story about three boys visiting their grandparents on a Missouri farm is set in the 1960s, a time when children could go out exploring on their own. The boys, her two sons and their cousin, heard about a cougar in the area and spent part of their vacation looking for it. When they searched an abandoned farmhouse, they had a scare, she said.
“This book is a story involving three generations of a family,” she said, “My goal was to show the harmony among the members.”
Illustrations for the book were drawn by another Bella Vistan, Jim R. Goff.
Alderton earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree while she worked at Eastern Illinois University. Her focus has always been creative writing, and she has won awards for poetry and short stories. Her first book, published in 2006, is “A Real Name for Puppy.”
On Nov. 14, she will read from her new book at Elementary Story Time at the Bella Vista Library at 5:30 p.m. She will also have books available to sell.
