Back 40 April story hike with plants and insects set

- Staff Reports

BELLA VISTA — Bugs and plants exist and evolve together. What do they do for one another, and what can that do for you?

Learn all about native plant material and the insects that thrive during the next informational Back 40 Story guided hike on the Back 40 trails, set for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7. Everyone will meet at the Metfield Golf Trailhead parking lot for a “show and tell.” Hikers will then be shuttled to the start of the hike at the north end of “The Ledges” trail.

The hike — The Importance of Native Plants for Insects and Birds — will be led by Don Steinkraus, professor of entomology at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Steinkraus earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, followed by a master’s degree in mycology and later a doctorate in entomology — the study of insects. He has taught at the University of Arkansas for 30 years and currently teaches courses in apiculture (beekeeping), insect anatomy, biological control and scientific photography. His research includes integrated pest management using insect pathogens. Steinkraus has a deep interest in the conservation of insects, particularly monarchs, swallowtails, moths and bees.

Following the hike, a shuttle will take participants back to their vehicles. The total distance of the hike will be approximately three miles.

This hike is moderately strenuous. Appropriate clothing and shoes are required. Participants should also bring insect repellent, sunscreen and water. The Back 40 Trails are single-track, which means they are dirt, narrow and sometimes rocky or have exposed tree roots. The trails are not appropriate for strollers. Friendly dogs are welcome on a leash.

An alternate weather date for this event is set for Saturday, April 14.
