In 2005, the Firehouse Subs founders established the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation with the mission of providing funding, lifesaving equipment, and educational opportunities to first responders and public safety organizations. Through the non-profit 501(c)(3), Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has granted more than $37.7 million to hometown heroes in 47 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, including more than $540,000 in Arkansas.

Bella Vista Fire Department has been awarded a digital fire extinguisher training system, thanks to a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

The department received the BullsEye Digital Fire Extinguisher Training System, valued at $15,678.07, and will use the system to conduct in-house and public fire extinguisher training classes. This is a service the department already offers, but this new system will improve the current class.

Fire extinguishers are not meant to put out large fires, Fire Inspector Gary Bowman said. They are instead a tool to be used to get out of a dangerous fire situation.

During the training class, instructors teach participants about the different types of fire extinguishers and the different types of fires on which they should be used. Participants learn how to operate a fire extinguisher and then practice putting out a virtual fire.

The new system offers the simulation of putting out a fire with a real fire extinguisher in your hands, going through the same steps you would in a real fire situation. Instead of the dry chemical, the device uses a laser aimed at the screen to put out the fire.

The new virtual system allows for indoor training, as it eliminates the need to use propane to create true fire. The system is also less messy and saves the department the cost of refilling or replacing used extinguishers after each class. With this new mobile unit, the class can be taught at locations throughout the community and at community events.

Fire extinguisher training classes are free to Bella Vista residents and business. Call the department to set up an appointment, 479-855-8249.
