Barn Redux

MILLBROOK, NEW YORK, a sleepy, bucolic town tucked into the rolling landscape of the Hudson Valley, may be a mere 90-minute drive from the frenzy of New York City, but it feels worlds away. It was also home to 40 acres of former farmland boasting four substantial barns in various states of disrepair until Jeff and Thelma Zwirn had a vision to restore and improve upon the structures, creating a “gentleman’s farm” that would serve as the family compound. The main barn, featured here and on the cover, is 66 feet long by 32 feet wide, and though the siding wasn’t salvageable, the handhewn oak timber frame was totally intact. In the end, the couple restored the main barn, a studio barn, a tractor barn and a bunk barn — all to the delight of family and friends.
