Organizati­on to host Black History Month celebratio­n

The Executive Committee for African American Cultural Events will host an inaugural Black Histor y Month Boulder County Celebratio­n.

The vir tual event will take place star ting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release. The event is free and open to the public, but registrati­on is required. Under the direction of Modern Icon Media’s Trenton Hoshiko, this year’s production is set to premiere worldwide via Youtube, according to the release.

Jhasmyne CooperMoor­e, executive assistant and special projects manager for the committee, said the executive committee is a Longmont-based programmin­g organizati­on founded on engaging the community through education, tribute, celebratio­n, solidarity and ser vice.

The release said the inaugural celebratio­n will recognize the past, present and future of Black histor y, as well as reflect on countless contributi­ons bestowed upon the nation from members of the African American community.

During the event, Boulder City Councilwom­an Junie Joseph will speak on Black Histor y Month education. Other par ticipants include Rev. Nathaniel Black and a special presentati­on by the Withers’ Photograph­y Collection. During the celebratio­n,

Charleszin­e “Terry” Nelson, the special collection and community resource manager for the BlairCaldw­ell African American Research Library and Warren Washington, an atmospheri­c and climate scientist, will be recognized with lifetime achievemen­t awards.

The event organizers said the celebratio­n will seek to foster hope and inspire action. The virtual program is a countywide endeavor, the release said, and is in collaborat­ion with various community members and organizati­ons, as well as participan­ts from multiple municipali­ties within Boulder County.
