Markel Homes selected to Receive a 2021 USGBC Leadership Award for Outstanding Commitment to Advancing Green Building

BOULDER – On June 10, in a live virtual event, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that Markel Homes has been named a recipient of their 2021 USGBC Regional Leadership Award. Markel Homes joins an impressive slate of awardees that include organizations, projects and individuals around the world who are using green building and sustainable practices to improve the quality of life for those around them.

“Following a difficult year, it is truly inspiring to recognize our green building leaders that have continued their commitment to green building and sustainable communities while adapting to the changing environments around us,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. “The 2021 USGBC Leadership Award awardees have improved our world through the power of green building and it is their contributions and work that have helped our communities stay safe and healthy.”

Markel Homes has a long history of creating sustainable, livable and inclusive homes in Colorado’s Front Range. Markel made energy efficiency and Energy Star® certification a priority years ago. Their homes feature certifications from LEED®, Energy Star®, Indoor AIRPLUS, and the Zero Energy Ready Home program from the US Department of Energy, all designed to improve the home’s indoor comfort, save money and lower the home’s maintenance requirements. In 2020 alone, Markel built 79 inclusive and multi-generational, LEED certified homes. Founded in 1973 by Michael Markel, design, innovation and sustainability have always been some of his top priorities. The company has been a leader in the Boulder region for designing homes that are energy efficient and cost effective for homeowners, as well as neighborhoods that support sustainable living practices, with access to trails and open space, mountain views, and nearby shops, restaurants and services.

Markel Homes has made sustainability integral to every home they build. Energy Star® appliances, no VOC paints, high performance HVAC, windows and insulation systems, and sustainable building materials are all standard elements that go into a Markel Home. North End, West Grange, Silver Creek, Blue Sage, along with Dakota Ridge Village and Northfield Commons, are all neighborhoods built by Markel Homes with sustainability at the forefront of their design.

Michael Markel said, “We are humbled to receive this incredible award from the USGBC. We create sustainable homes because it matters to us, we care about our home buyers and we care about our community.”
