Times-Call (Longmont)

An unusual definition of local journalism

-

Today’s sportswriters seemingly fancy themselves as mystery writers because the reader must often wait many paragraphs to find out the score of a game. Eddie Herz, in his excellent Sunday summary of Friday’s CSU/UTAH State game, advanced the artform to a new level — no score is given! Maybe it was planned, but if it weren’t for the adjacent box score, one would never know the actual result.

I would be inclined to excuse the TimesCall as Mr. Herz represents the Loveland Reporter-herald. But on the next page, an advertisement in large capital letters urges us to “SUPPORT INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM,” then gives thanks for reading the local newspaper. I’m all in for independent journalism, but cannot help noting the Times-call definition of local has really grown. If my count is correct, Sunday’s local content is limited to three pieces: a League of Women Voters announcement, covercoverage of a Longmont Police retirement, and a column (oops — maybe only two — the columnist lives in nearby Firestone). needs, one that comes to the position without a set agenda and is willing to listen, learn and lead. Tim truly takes the time to research all aspects of an issue, asking questions and analyzing the data in order to make an intelligent decision.

We know he is the right person to lead Longmont and strongly urge you to vote for Tim Waters for mayor. accomplishments or his mayoral plans, because they are unpopular with the majority of voters. I am concerned that Tim will turn the city over to developers through quasi governmental metro taxing districts. His defense of metro districts is simply: “That is just one tool in the toolbox.” Metro tax districts are one tool we don’t need because they are dangerous and are not equitable, collaborative or inclusive.

Meanwhile, Joan Peck has been working tirelessly to build coalitions with stakeholders and commissions to bring peak rail service to Longmont, to increase affordable housing and housing services for the unhoused, and to fight for clean air. Joan stands for real issues that impact all of us — today. Vote for Joan!
