Thank you, Colorado Democrat legislators

- — Stan Gelb, Longmont

The 2023 Colorado legislative session just ended. The result was many new laws that will benefit almost all Coloradans. It’s more progress than can be described in a short letter. So I’m going to share the good news in just two categories.

Everyone should be aware that the bodily autonomy of all women is under attack by the GOP. So our Colorado Democrats just enacted multiple reproductive health measures, including Protections for Accessing Reproductive Health Care (SB23-188), Increasing Access to Reproductive Health Care (SB23-189), Deceptive Trade Practice for Pregnancy-related Services (SB23-190) and Ensure 12-Month Contraception Coverage (SB23-284). All of these measures will help women secure and protect their bodily autonomy. All were passed despite maximum opposition by GOP legislators who obviously care nothing about women’s lives and health.

Everyone should be aware that all Americans now live with the constant threat of death by gun violence. So our Colorado Democrats just enacted gun violence prevention measures that include Expanding ‘Red Flag’ laws (SB23-170), Implementing a Three-day Waiting Period (HB231219), Improving Gun Violence Survivors’ Access to Justice (SB23-168), Raising the Minimum Age to Purchase a Firearm to 21(SB23-169) and Cracking Down on Ghost Guns (SB23-279). These laws have the potential to save many lives while not interfering with anyone’s rights. These laws were passed despite maximum opposition by the GOP legislators who obviously care nothing about the lives now being bloodily ended by gun violence.

Everyone, log onto leg. colorado.gov to obtain the contact information for our Boulder County legislators. Everyone, take a moment to thank our great representatives Karen Mccormick, Judy Amabile, Junie Joseph, Jennifer Parenti, and Kyle Brown, and to our great statehouse senators Sonya Jaquez-lewis, Janice Marchman and Steve Fenberg for their ongoing devotion to serving their Boulder County constituents and all Coloradans.
