James "Jim" S. Dwyer, age 96, of Longmont, Colorado passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023.

Born July 11, 1927 to James and Victoria Dwyer. Jim was born in New York thanks to his parents who moved back to the states from Newfoundland so he would be a U.S. citizen. He attended Episcopalian church as a child but gave up on religion after he witnessed the carnage during WWII. He joined the army as a 17 year old because that's what all his friends were doing. He worked on the docks in Brooklyn during his teen years before joining the army to fight for our freedom during WWII. He later received an engineering degree and thanks to a casual meeting with a friend who mentioned he was working for IBM, Jim replied "who?". IBM was not a familiar name at that time.

Jim eventually was hired by IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY and volunteered to be one of the transfers to Colorado to start up the new plant in Boulder in 1965. He loved the challenges they faced to make sure the plant was safe for all their employees since a lot of chemicals went into manufacturing of magnetic tape drives and other products. He spent many great years with IBM, finally retiring after being called back several times to help with difficult issues regarding safety. He spent the next 36 years working as their Safety Engineer in Boulder, CO.

Thanks to that transfer, Jim and Phyllis met through mutual friends and wed in 1979. Jim loved hiking and camping in the mountains, and was a member of the Colorado Mountain Club. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed sharing his love of books with friends. Jim and Phyl traveled the world together and made new friends along the way.

He is survived by his wife Phyl, their children Kris (Beth), Rob (Cheryl) and Wendy (Marshall) and 8 grandchildren, Audrey, Erica, Caroline, Greg, Garrett, Renee, Alex and Nathan.
