Unwelcome calls
For several months now, I’ve been receiving calls — at least one a day, sometimes more. They used to be at 9 in the morning. Now they’re at 7 and 8 in the morning. And the calls are always designated by a very refined voice as someone (soliciting) donations to the police and would I please give a donation to the police. And I answer, equally politely I hope, saying that I (and) my husband, a veteran of World War II, … give what we can to veterans causes. Since then, we get phone calls not only every day, but today for example, at 7 a.m. I got a call, same refined voice; 8 o’clock, another call, same refined voice; and a third one around 9:30. They come from different towns around the area, so I don’t know what it is. But I’ve asked them, I’ve pleaded with them that my husband needs the rest, he can’t be interrupted by phone calls. … I’ve (made) every excuse to have them stop doing this, but that just gets worse. I don’t know if others are having the problem or not, but please don’t get yourself caught up in this same scenario.
Hot schools
Can anyone tell me why the school year begins in the summer, approximately 39 days before fall? And then the news goes on and on about how hot the schools are.
Bohn development
A 6-acre property at Bohn neighborhood with 70 residential units seems like a bit much, and I’m hoping there’s going to be greenery there instead of all kinds of pavement. So hopefully they have integrity and do it right.
Permethrin
• VDCI uses permethrin in its spray for mosquitoes. Permethrin is highly toxic to bees, not water-soluble, and can last up to 20days after landing on your plants. Read the fact sheet for permethrin from the National Pesticide Information Center. Who are you going to believe? The guys who get paid to spray the poison or independent scientists who study it?
• The mosquito insecticide permethrin used in Longmont neighborhoods is a “weak carcinogen” and the “toxicity data show the compound is highly toxic to honeybees as well as other beneficial insects” and “highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates.” This is on the EPA permethrin facts sheet dated August 2009.
Arts center
I was so pleased to read in the Friday paper the plans for the sugar beet factory. That blighted space will become the centerpiece for Longmont and will provide a wonderful center for arts and entertainment. Now all we need to do is pass the ballot initiative in November to make it happen.
