Learning through letters to Santa Claus

- Email Betty Heath at begeheath690@aol.com.

Since I volunteer this school year helping fourth-grade students learn how to write from their hearts, I thought I would begin the session by teaching them how to write letters.

I was beyond surprised to the point of being totally amazed that most of them had never seen a letter, much less know how to write one. Thus began the journey of learning the five parts of a simple informal letter.

The question was then asked, who should receive the letter? It was unanimously decided that the jolly gentleman who lives at the North Pole should receive their Christmas wishes in a letter.

Following are three of their first experience at writing letters each written verbatim on Dec. 4, 2023.

Dear Santa,

I bet your busy with all the presents and Elfs. Santa just to let you know that I have been really good with helping and writing to you right now.

What I really want for Christmas is an American girl doll and lots of chapter books. I really like reading big books and quiet and funny books. I also have a really big quistion. If one of your workers got sick who would help them?

Another thing what food dose Mrs. Claus make. Is it candy, sandwichs or hot dogs? I also really am happy that Elfie is here in my house.

You sure have tiny workers. Thank you for giving us presents and making christmas happend and every year is a special time of year. Thank You Santa for reading this. Merry Christmas

Dear Santa Clause,

I have a really big and wondering question. My question is why do you give presents to kids all over the world? Why don’t you keep them for yourself? Sincerely, Ava

Dear Santa,

Hello; for christmas I want a play tickets for wicked and a therapy gag stufft animal.

I have been so so so good this year. I hope I am on the nice list. Am I?? But there is one speshale thing I want. It is for my sister Mary. I want her to be in theripe and for her to fell better. From: Hazel

Here are three letters written from the heart of three fourthgrade students. One asked if I thought Santa would really get them, since they were going to the North Pole. I assured them I would mail them to him in plenty of time for him to fill their wishes.

No, they are not written perfectly. But it’s the Christmas season and since they are written from their hearts, I believe Santa Claus will fill each wish from his heart.
