Arcadia, Cheltenham work on partnership

Cheltenham School District and Arcadia University could be working together to improve culture and education for the local area.

During the Cheltenham School Board meeting Sept. 11, Arcadia University President Tobey Oxholm presented a proposition to the board to open the university up to residents, students and faculty for various educational endeavors and cultural events.

“Part of my job as president is to bring the community in,” Oxholm said. “We want to be more involved in the community.”

While the plan is still in its early stages, Oxholm said he hopes to eventually open the Arcadia campus up to residents for classes and offer assistance to students and teachers. He said students and administration are eager to help where they can and would like to participate in more community service opportunities around Cheltenham. Oxholm also said the university is working on theatrical and musical performances that will be open to the community.

“I pledge our efforts to help the school district succeed,” Oxholm said. “Even if it’s helping with school work and after school programs.”

The board was excited at the prospect of residents, students and staff gaining from the university, which is located in Glenside near the district’s high school.

“We’re very invigorated that we have this partnership growing,” board President Tina Viletto said. “It is a wonderful opportunity to move our community forward.”
