Township swears in new volunteer firefighters
CHELTENHAM >> District Judge Christopher Cerski conducted the swearing-in of 10 new volunteer firefighters during the Oct. 17 board of commissioners meeting.
Officials said each of the recipients have completed a Fire 1 class, which requires more than 200 hours of training.
“It’s so important that we recognize the volunteers that we’re so fortunate to have in our community,” board President Daniel Norris said. “They contribute so much to the township. Our taxes — which aren’t the lowest to begin with — would be much higher if we didn’t have round-the-clock volunteers. They are committed to helping and serving the community, and we thank you for that.”
In other business, the Friends of the Cheltenham Township Libraries were commended in honor of National Friends of Libraries Week. Present to receive the award were Myron Goldman of the Elkins Park Library, alongside representatives of the La Mott and Glenside libraries.
According to officials, friends of the library groups are entirely volunteer-driven organizations
and serve to enhance community access to print and electronic materials.
“Without the friends groups, the libraries wouldn’t be as strong as they are now,” Norris said. “You’ve helped us move from good to great. Like so many of our volunteers, you do great work, and you save money for the community. You help control our expenses.”
“Thank you, commissioners, for the recognition,” Goldman said.
