DETWEILER, MARIAN L. >> 80, of Souderton, PA; formerly of Ottsville, PA died October 23, 2018 at Souderton Mennonite Homes. She was the daughter of the late Paul D. Detweiler & the late Anna Mae (Leatherman) Detweiler. A viewing will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Souderton Mennonite Homes, 207 W. Summit Street, Souderton, Pennsylvania 18964, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 pm. Julia Louise Means was born on September 14, 1939 in Lancaster, PA to Mable Richardson and Ulysses Grant Means. Julia joined her two big brothers, Ulysses Grant II (Bobby) and Richard Wendell (Mickey), as the “surprise” baby girl of the family. Julia was educated in the Lancaster public schools and grew up worshipping at Bethel AME Church. Before graduating from high school she met a local Millersville University basketball star, Johnny Parker from Norristown, PA. Their friendship grew and romance blossomed through Julia’s freshman year at Rider University in Trenton, NJ. After marrying in 1960, they were blessed two years later with a daughter, Jill, followed shortly thereafter with a son, Albert II. Julia went on to earn degrees from Montgomery County Community College and Temple University. She positively impacted the lives of numerous children during her 30 years in the North Penn School District as a 4th and 5th grade teacher at GwynNor and West Point Elementary schools. She and her family enjoyed many happy moments at their home in Gwynedd, PA, and summers in Ocean City and West Cape May, NJ. Julia was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Valley Forge Alumnae Chapter, and numerous state and local organizations, serving as an advocate for children everywhere. Julia peacefully departed this life on October 15, 2018, holding hands with her children. Recently preceded in death by Johnny, her husband of 57 years, left to cherish Julia’s memory are her devoted children, Dr. Jill Parker Clark and Albert P. Parker II, Esq.; a sonin-law, John “Tony” A. Clark Sr.; a daughter-in-law, Melissa R. Parker; five grandchildren who absolutely adored their “Grammy”: Jiana Means Clark, John William Parker II, Avery Joan Parker, John “Jack” Anthony Clark Jr., and Peyton Alissa Parker; a brother-in-law, Robert M. Parker; sistersin-law Ann G. Means and Evelyn I. Means; childhood and long-time friends Judy Banks (70+ years of friendship!), Marion Johnson, and Shirley Ransome; and an extended village of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, former students and numerous others whose life she touched. Services will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Spring House, PA on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 beginning at 8:30 am. Interment will be private.
