Keith Val­ley ed­u­ca­tor named Teacher of the Year

HOR­SHAM >> Keith Val­ley Mid­dle School phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion teacher Erika Sch­wan­beck was re­cently named Mid­dle School Phys­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion Teacher of the Year by the Penn­syl­va­nia State As­so­ci­a­tion for Health, Phys­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion, Re­cre­ation and Dance (PSSAHPERD).

The award was pre­sented at the an­nual PSSAHPERD con­ven­tion held at Seven Springs Re­sort.

Since 2006, Sch­wan­beck has taught health and phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion at Keith Val­ley Mid­dle School. She cur­rently serves as the cur­ricu­lum co­or­di­na­tor for the school’s depart­ment of health and phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion.

Among her many ac­com­plish­ments are de­vel­op­ing and im­ple­ment­ing an af­ter-school pro­gram de­signed to im­prove girls’ self-es­teem and serv­ing as a mem­ber of the Keith Val­ley As­sis­tance Team for Stu­dents, which helps stu­dents with health, aca­demic, be­hav­ior, well­ness and at­ten­dance is­sues. She has also been trained in restora­tive prac­tices, an ap­proach that re­lies on con­struc­tive con­flict res­o­lu­tions.

Sch­wan­beck re­ceived her Bach­e­lor’s of Science in move­ment stud­ies and ex­er­cise science with a mi­nor in psy­chol­ogy from East Strouds­burg Univer­sity. She con­tin­ued her ed­u­ca­tion at West Ch­ester Univer­sity, re­ceiv­ing cer­ti­fi­ca­tion through the post-bac­calau­re­ate pro­gram and com­pleted a master’s de­gree in cur­ricu­lum and in­struc­tion at the Univer­sity of Scran­ton.

Dur­ing her teach­ing ca­reer, she has coached high school softball and mid­dle school ten­nis and field hockey.
