Darryl John Smith

-

Darryl John Smith was born August 20, 1943 to Donald and Dorothy (Hartman) Smith in Allentown, PA. His older brother David still lives in Allentown, his younger brother Donald is deceased. As a boy, he was an avid reader and loved scouting and the outdoors. He went on to major in English and play football at Kutztown, then to a graduate program and hunting and fishing in Fairbanks, Alaska. Finally he settled in Souderton, PA, to teach high school English, coach football, wrestling, cross country, and soccer, hunt and fish some more, and most importantly meet and marry Bonnie (Taylor) Smith. Then came their children, Danny, Laura, and Erin, three beagles, a huge garden, yearly vacations to Canada and Chincoteague, and hunting and fishing everywhere. Somehow he managed to fit in being a Cub Scout den “mother” and PTA president. He retired from Souderton Area High School after teaching English for 38 years, and soon started teaching Linguistics at Muhlenberg College and volunteering to teach classes at libraries and churches in the area. Religion was always important to him and he was an active member of Little Zion Lutheran Church in Earlington, PA. A few of his other favorite things were his grandkids, fly-tying and bird-watching. Unfortunately, prostate cancer took its toll, but through hospice he was able to die peacefully at home on March 11, 2021. He dedicated his body to science so that even in death he could teach anatomy to medical students. Everyone mentioned here is grieving, as are countless friends, students, and athletes. Only the fish rest easier. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made “In Memory Of Darryl Smith” to Indian Valley Public Library, 100 E. Church Rd. Telford, PA 18969, www.ivpl.org .
