WHITEMARSH » Matt Sadel’s pin with just five seconds left in the second period at 189 pounds hiked Senior Night up several notches and put Plymouth Whitemarsh on victory’s doorstep.

“Our guys came out here with the same goal in mind,” said Sadel, one of the Colonials’ five happy seniors. “We just wanted to get this one done — last home meet of the year. And we did the job.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh rose up and earned a thrilling 39-27 victory over rival Abington Wednesday night, bringing the party to an atmosphere already decked out with balloons, poster boards and streamers.

“It felt really good. It’s Senior Night so I was really excited,” said Sadel.

PW raised its Suburban One League Liberty Division record to 2-3 and is now 8-7 overall. Abington is now 8-7 as well, with a 2-2 mark in the Liberty.

The Ghosts have a home match with St. Joe’s Prep on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. while the Colonials will get ready for the SOL Liberty Championships: both they and the Ghosts will be there, Feb. 15 at Quakertown

at 3:30 p.m.

Sadel, who reached districts two years ago (the pandemic disrupted things last season), is primed for a big postseason.

“I’m expecting to do really good this year,” the senior said. “I’ve been putting the work in so we’ll see what happens.”

Sadel raised his record to 17-8, pinning Jonah Dalton in 3 minutes, 55 seconds.

“In the beginning, I was going for the guillotine, and I wasn’t able to get it,” Sadel said. “I noticed, every time I put the leg in, he was kind of reaching with his arm. So then I stuck the half in, powered him over, and I scooped the head and just finished it off.”

The win gave the Colonials

a commanding 30-15 lead with four matches to go.

Said Sadel: “At that point, I feel like everyone’s morale was boosted. We kind of carried the momentum to the end.”

PW’s seniors came through in the clutch: Jake Williams won by pin at 120 and Jared McGee got a pin at 145.

Abington got to within 30-27 with pins by Jamie Riveria at 215 and Mason Glemser at 285, but then PW put it away at 106.

That is where Younguk Han came through with a third-period pin of Jonathan Gilette, giving the Colonials the clinching points they needed.
