GIRLS WRESTLING GIVEN EMERGING SPORTS STATUS » SanctionPA is excited to announce the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) has named girls wrestling as the first sport to achieve Emerging Sports Status.

The PIAA has voted unanimously to approve girls wrestling as a PIAA Emerging Sport under their new emerging sport process.

This designation indicates that girls wrestling is a sport that the PIAA is tracking for potential full sponsorship and demonstrates that girls wrestling has a clear plan and path to sanctioning in the PIAA’s eyes.

With this adoption, SanctionPA

will provide regular updates to the PIAA Board. Also, girls wrestling will be listed as an Emerging Sport on school sponsorship paperwork.

It does not put girls wrestling under the jurisdiction of the PIAA yet, but communicates the sport is adhering to guidelines and would fit consideration for a full sponsorship model when 100 teams are reached.

The PIAA current rules require a minimum of 100 schools to form official girls wrestling programs before fully sanctioning the sport. Currently, 35 schools have approved girls wrestling programs and are paving the pathway of Pennsylvania high school girls wrestling.

Girls wrestling is the fastest growing high school sport in the country. In Pennsylvania, participation grew by over 80% from the 2020-2021 season to the 2021-2022 season and has experienced over a 200% growth in the past several years. All 12 PIAA district areas have girls participating in wrestling within their area schools. Nationally, there are now 34 state high school associations sanctioning a girls wrestling state championship.

Across the state, the SanctionPA campaign is working to provide educational information and resources to help grow opportunities for girls wrestling and to help promote the addition of girls wrestling programs.
