Tappen on the mark in sweep of UNC

Wiss grad heating up for Virginia

Virginia’s Alex Tappen (Wissahicko­n) had a major presence in the Cavaliers’ weekend sweep of North Carolina. The graduate student was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Friday’s 4-2 win to open the series.

Tappen had a key hit in Saturday’s 11-7 walk-off win in 10 innings, lacing an RBI single that tied the score 7-7 and scoring as part of the walk-off grand slam. In total, Tappen was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and the RBI in the win.

In Sunday’s 10-3 win to clinch the sweep, Tappen was 2-for-5 at the plate with a solo home run — his 10th of the season — and an RBI single while also scoring twice and pushing his season average to .350.

Earlier in the week, Tappen was 1-for-5 with a run in Tuesday’s 9-7 loss to VCU and scored a run in Wednesday’s 6-4 win over Georgetown.

• Binghamton freshman Evin Sullivan (North Penn) had the first grand slam of his college career as part of a 3-for-5, four RBI day in Saturday’s 6-3 win over NJIT.

• Eric Marasheski (La Salle) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for Princeton in Sunday’s 14-10 loss to Harvard. The junior, a North Wales resident, is batting .338 in 24 games this season.

• Penn’s Joe Miller (La Salle) was tremendous on the hill in Saturday’s 2-1 win in 13 innings over Brown. The senior lefty went seven innings, a career high, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out 10 batters.

Miller is now 5-2 on the season with a 3.57 ERA.

• Conlan Wall (Souderton) went 3-for-4 with a run scored as St. Joe’s fell to Penn 7-4 on Tuesday, while Max Hitman (Archbishop Carroll) went 1-for-2 with a run after entering as a pinch-hitter.

The Hawks faced VCU on the road in a weekend series. In Friday’s 7-2 loss, Wall was 2-for-5 with a run and Andrew Cossetti (La Salle) was 1-for-5 with an RBI single. On Saturday, St. Joe’s dropped a 13-9 decision where Wall went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and Cossetti was 2-for-3 and a run scored.

St. Joe’s won 6-3 on Sunday thanks to a five-run fifth inning that saw Wall single in a run, then score when Cossetti launched a grand slam. Wall finished the day 2-for-5 with an RBI and run while Cossetti ended 1-for-3 with a walk, run scored and four RBI

In the last eight games, Wall is 20-for-34 with 10 runs scored.

• Kutztown’s Antonio Rossillo (Archbishop Wood) was 1-for-3 with a two-run single and run scored while Gavin Moretski (La Salle) walked twice and scored two times in Wednesday’s 9-7 loss to IUP.

Zach Moretski (La Salle) went 3-for-4 with a run in Friday’s 6-1 loss to East Stroudsbur­g.

• West Chester defeated Wilmington 10-8 in 12 innings on Tuesday. JR Gifford (Archbishop Wood) was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and drew two walks while Mike Ferrara (Wood) also walked twice and was 1-for-3 and scored a run on Gifford’s long ball.

The Golden Rams swept a weekend series against Millersvil­le starting with Friday’s 7-6 victory. Justin Horn (Upper Dublin) returned to the lineup for the first time since April 2 in style, going 2-for-4 with a two-run single and two runs scored. Ferrara was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

In Saturday’s 11-2 win, Horn reached four times, going 2-for-4 and drawing two walks to go with two RBI, four runs scored and two stolen bases. Zack Miles (North Penn) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Gifford was 1-for-1 with a walk and run scored.

Wrapping up the sweep with a 10-1 win in Game 2 of Saturday’s doublehead­er, Horn finished his comeback weekend 1-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Ferrara was 1-for-2 with a threerun home run, four total RBI and two runs scored.

• Bloomsburg’s Quinn Holt (North Penn) pitched 3.1 innings of flawless relief in but the Huskies fell 6-5 to Mansfield on Friday. Holt scattered three hits and no runs, while striking out two and walking none.

Softball

• Mady Volpe (North Penn) picked up a pitching win with a scoreless inning of work for Coastal Carolina in Saturday’s 12-10 win over Georgia State. Volpe struck out one batter in the seventh and set the stage for a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning.

• Jordan Pietrzykos­ki (North Penn) went 2-for-3 with a run scored for St. Francis (PA) in a 4-2 Game 1 loss of Saturday’s doublehead­er with Fairleigh Dickinson. The infielder was 1-for-3 in Game 2’s 5-1 loss.

The junior was 2-for-3 and 1-for-3 respective­ly in a 2-1 loss and 5-2 win over Mount St Mary’s on Wednesday.

• Drexel’s Kylee Guerrera

(Archbishop Wood) singled and scored a run as part of a 1-for-3 day in Sunday’s 11-4 loss to James Madison.

• Kayla Tauber (HatboroHor­sham) scored two runs, including a straight steal of home, for St. Joe’s in Saturday’s 5-4 win over UMass. The freshman infielder has seven stolen bases this season.

• Kutztown’s Bean Hughes (Upper Moreland) went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored while Hannah Reimel (William Tennent) was 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday’s 5-0 win over Shepherd. In the 2-1 loss to cap the doublehead­er, Reimel was 1-for-3 with an RBI single.

In Saturday’s 3-1 win over Millersvil­le, Hughes went 3-for-4 with a run and Reimel scored a run. Later, in a 9-4 win in Game 2 of the doublehead­er, Reimel was 1-for-3 with a walk.

• Bloomsburg’s Nicolette Ray (Abington) drove in four runs, including a tworun home run, in Friday’s 18-2 win over Mansfield and also scored twice. Ray followed up by going 2-for-3 with a two-run single and two more runs scored in the Huskies’ 11-2 Game 2 win against Mansfield.

The Huskies split a Saturday doublehead­er with Lock Haven. In the 5-1 Game 1 loss, Ray went 1-for-3 at the plate. In Game 2, the Huskies won 12-4 and Ray collected a hit and an RBI.

Men’s lacrosse

• Jacksonvil­le finished an excellent regular season with a 17-5 win over Mercer on Saturday. Jackson Intrieri (Wissahicko­n) had three goals and two ground balls for the Dolphins while Ethan LaMond (La Salle) had two goals off the bench.

• Syracuse fell 21-15 to Virginia on Saturday but Jakob Phaup (Souderton) was still a force on faceoffs, winning 21-of-39 draws on the X and collecting nine ground balls.

Women’s lacrosse

• Marquette’s Elise Smigiel (Germantown Academy) registered two goals in Sunday’s 14-12 win over Georgetown

Georgetown’s Ali Diamond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a careerbest five goals in Sunday’s loss, bringing her season total to 28 goals.

• Old Dominion’s Moira Alexa (Upper Moreland) had an assist, caused turnover and two draw controls in Saturday’s 20-9 loss to Vanderbilt.

• Temple’s Riley McGowan (Souderton) had a goal in the Owls’ 18-7 loss to Florida on Saturday.

• Paige Gilbert (CB West) had a ground ball, caused turnover and two ground

balls for William & Mary in Saturday’s 18-11 loss to Hofstra.

• Butler’s Lindsey Schreiber (Upper Dublin) tallied a goal and three assists in Saturday’s 22-15 loss to UConn. The midfielder added four draw control wins.

• Duquesne finished its regular season with a 2012 win over St. Bonaventur­e on Saturday. Max Leszczynsk­i (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a hat trick, adding a ground ball and three draw controls for the Dukes and now has 20 goals on the season.

• St. Joe’s romped La Salle 22-11 on Saturday to finish the regular season with Sophia Kolkka (Plymouth Whitemarsh) posting two goals, an assist, four ground balls, four caused turnovers and a careerbest 12 draw controls. Maddie Yoder (Springfiel­d Twp) had two goals as well for St. Joe’s.

• Sam McGee (Abington) had two goals and three draw controls for Colorado in Friday’s 23-12 win over Oregon.

• Kendall Seifert (Gwynedd Mercy Academy) had a goal and two assists for UC Davis in Sunday’s 21-17 loss to San Diego State. The senior has 28 goals and four assists in 12 games this season.

Men’s basketball

• Jack Clark (Cheltenham) committed to NC State after transferri­ng from La Salle.

• Clifton Moore (Hatboro-Horsham) will be using his final season of eligibilit­y at Providence. Moore was with La Salle the past three seasons after starting his college career at Indiana.

Women’s basketball

• Taylor O’Brien (Plymouth Whitemarsh) announced she will be playing at Florida State for her final season of eligibilit­y. O’Brien spent the last four seasons at Bucknell and was a First Team All-Patriot League selection each of the past two years.

Track and field

• Bloomsburg’s Kelley Selheimer (North Penn) hit her PSAC qualifying time in the 1,500 at the Bucknell Team Challenge on Saturday. She set her personalbe­st in the process, finishing ninth overall with a time of 4:54.03. Jaime Diedel (North Penn) still a teammate of Selheimer’s also PR’d the event with a time of 4:56.92 to take 13th overall and is ranked 23rd in the conference this season. Melissa Sicinski (Pennridge) finished 28th in the 200 with a PR time of 27.46. Teammate Megan Gambogi (North Penn) took 31st with a tie of 27.91. Gambogi also finished 18th in the 400 with a time of 1:00.84. Sicinski took 19th with a personal-best of 1:01.23. Sicinski was also part of the 4x100 which placed fourth with a time of 49.83.

• Bloomsburh’s Ryan Duff (Plymouth Whitemarsh) took 25th in the 1,500 meter run at the Bucknell Team Challenge on Saturday. Duff finished with a PR of 4:12.45. Robert Wilson (Wissahicko­n) hit a PR for the Huskies in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 58.52, good enough for sixth place. The 4x100 relay team also did well, taking fifth with a time of 43.43. Marco Olmedo (Norristown) and Wilson were a part of that quartet.

• Jenkintown grad Jack Miller is off to a strong start in the outdoor season at Pitt.

The redshirt sophomore placed second in the 1,500-meter steeplecha­se in 4 minutes, 23.78 seconds as the Panthers competed at the Stan Romanoski Open.

Miller is coming off quite an outdoor season. He broke his own school record in the 3,000-meter run at the Tiger Paw Invitation­al at Clemson. Miller ran the best race of his young career as he secured his first victory of the season in the event. The redshirt sophomore finished over 12 seconds ahead of the secondplac­e runner as he posted a school-record time of 7:57.39. He became the first Panther in program history to post a sub-8 minute time in the 3,000.

Miller’s teammate at Pitt, La Salle grad Noah Walker, broke his own school record in the first event of the weekend at the Stan Romanoski Open.

With his sixth and final throw, Walker notched a massive toss that traveled 211 feet, 8 inches, to collect the victory in the hammer throw and set the school record for the Panthers. His throw also marked the second best in the ACC and 19th best in the NCAA so far this season.

Water polo

• Grove City’s Reese Trauger (Pennridge) earned Collegeiat­e Water Polo Associatio­n Division III East All-Conference honors. Trauger earned All-CWPA recoginito­n for the second straight season after meriting Second Team honors in 2021. This spring, she pumped in 46 goals and led Grove City with 35 assists. Trauger recorded 13 multi-goal performanc­es, highlighte­d by an eight-goal outing March 20th against Connecticu­t College.
