County announces Juneteenth events

- By For Medianews Group

Area residents and visitors alike can take part in a full slate of Juneteenth events in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County will hold an inaugural flag-raising ceremony at 10 a.m. on June 17 at the Montgomery County Courthouse at the intersection of Airy and Swede streets in downtown Norristown.

Juneteenth was first declared as a Montgomery County holiday in 2020, and this year it will be observed on Monday, June 20.

The historic day marks the end of slavery in the U.S. Although the Emancipation Proclamation took effect in 1863, it was not until June 19, 1865, that enslaved people in Texas were finally freed.

The event is open to the public and will feature remarks from local and county elected officials. The 2022 Art and Prose of Freedom contest winners are expected to be recognized and a reading from the Emancipation Proclamation will take place.

In Lansdale, special tours of the Peter Wentz Farmstead are scheduled for June 18 and June 19. The tours will focus on the lives of the enslaved people owned by the Wentz family and how their stories connect to the larger history of slavery in early Pennsylvania.

Tours are scheduled for each half-hour. The museum, located at 2030 Shearer Road, is a National Underground Railroad Network

to Freedom site. For tickets and more information, visit pwfjuneteenthtours.eventbrite.com.

Additionally, a Juneteenth book club and lecture honoring the history of the Black experience in America will begin at 10 a.m. on June 18 at Pottsgrove Manor, located at 100 W. King St., in Pottstown. The weekend event will feature Robert Hewitt, a professor emeritus from Shippensburg University.

The book club will discuss Edward E. Baptist’s “The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of America.” Those interested in participating in the book club must register online.

Hewitt will then give a lecture, “Together in History” at 1 p.m., sharing the importance of incorporating Black history into our shared narrative. The lecture is open to the public without preregistering.
