Montgomery County Girl Scouts Gold Awards
The following were Montgomery County Gold Award winners among Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania:
Grace D., Troop 754 Lower Moreland Mural and Beautification Program
“My Gold Award addressed student’s mental health as they attend high school. I painted a mural in the hallway of my high school, creating a brighter and more inspirational atmosphere for students to learn in.”
Teagan D., Troop 71609 Care Package Initiative
“My Gold Award aimed to provide clothing and essential care items to queer individuals in the Philadelphia area. I created informational resources and a temporary installation at my library to educate the general public about the queer community in America, challenges transgender individuals face, and the harmful impacts of dysphoria.”
Malia G., Troop 71734 The Art of Up-Cycling
“For my project I up-cycled glass bottles into decorative night lights, bird feeders, and decorative flower vases. I also led up-cycling workshops at Engage Art Studio. Before I demonstrated the craft, I gave a small lesson about recycling. I talked about the reasons recycling glass was important and had a question and answer session after. After giving the lesson, I showed them how to make the craft and made sure they knew what to do. They each made one to take home.”
Kaitlyn H., Troop 753 Katie’s Play it Forward Gold Award
“My Gold Award project focused on recycling sports equipment in our community by gathering donations of unneeded and outgrown gear to provide to area kids to help them get involved in youth sports. My team collected over 2,091 equipment items and provided 1,020 free sports equipment pieces to 188 youth players.”
Hannah H., Troop 7090 Inclusion Week
“For My Gold Award Project, I created a week called inclusion week that raised awareness and fostered a community of acceptance for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
MaryAnn L., Troop 1221 Save the Bees: Don’t be a Hater, Save the Pollinators
“For my Gold Award, I wanted to publicize the importance of pollinators to encourage other people to take part in saving them. I attended various community events to spread the word about endangered pollinators, and hosted a ‘Save the Bees, Please’ event with Green Lane Park. I also researched, designed, fundraised, planted and maintained a pollinator garden at Green Lane Park to inspire people and show them what they can do to help.”
Lilah M., Troop 71091 Tack Room Remodel
“My Gold Award aimed to update the tack room at Horses for Handicapped. The saddler racks were oriented in a way that took a lot of upper body strength that many of the rider lacked. With my team, I installed a new saddle rack system that will make putting heavy saddles away much more accessible for all people who work at the barn.”
Sarah V.. Troop 71091 DIY Reusable T-Shirt Bags
“My Gold Award aimed to reduce the use of plastic bags. I collected old t-shirts and taught my team and community how to repurpose them into bags. Over 400 reusable bags were created.”
