Abington picks up nonconfere­nce girls tennis win

GIRLS TENNIS

Abington 6, Villa Joseph Marie 1: Isabella Grand-Tono and Cindy Fu picked up straight-sets wins at No. 2 and 3 singles respective­ly for the Ghosts on Friday.

Wissahicko­n 7, North Penn 0: The Trojans didn’t drop a set in rolling to the SOL crossover win on Friday. YiYi Huang set the tone with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dakota Williams at No. 1 singles. The best match of the day though was at No. 4 doubles where Lexi Frutkin/ Katherine Kooman outlasted Karlyn Juckniewit­z and Jamie Seo 7-6 (4), 6-2. Upper Perk 7, Norristown 0: The Eagles didn’t pick up a set in dropping the match on Friday.

Upper Dublin 6, Hatboro-Horsham 1: The Cardinals swept the doubles matches en route to the SOL Liberty win on Thursday. Lily Wu picked up a thriller at No. 1 singles for the Hatters, winning at No. 1 singles in a third-set tiebreak.

Wissahicko­n 7, Abington 0: The Trojans dropped just one set in rolling to the SOL Liberty win on Thursday. YiYi Huang set the tone with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Nicolette Agassi won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Wissahicko­n 7, CB West 0 : Wissahicko­n’s Yi Yi Huang, Saachi Mehta and Nicolette Agassi all won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0 as the Trojans swept the SOL nondivisio­n match.

La Salle 2, Archbishop Wood 1: The Explorers rallied for the PCL win ion OT on Friday. CJ Massella was credited with the game-winner. Hatboro-Horsham 4, Quakertown 0: The Hatters won big in SOL Liberty action on Friday with goals from Jake Freedman (2), Isaac Kakiko and Anthony Pumilia. Assists were from Kakiko,

Tony Kuhner and Raphael Laiss. Noah Schlosser recorded four saves in net to

preserve the shutout. Wissahicko­n 3, Quakertown 1: Logan Schorn, Jack O’Donnell and Jeevan Jouhal each had a goal as Wissahicko­n stopped a two-game skid with an SOL Liberty win at Quakertown. Michael Om had two assists for the Trojans (2-2-0, 1-2-0 division) while Chris Rossetti also collected an assist. Hatboro-Horsham 2, PW 1: HatboroHor­sham scored twice in the SOL Liberty contest’s final nine minutes, Isaac Kakiko’s gamewinner coming with just 75 seconds remaining in regulation as the Hatters topped host Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Tony Kuhner tallied HH’s first goal. Anthony Pumilia and Enrico Romano each had an assist for the Hatters (3-1-0, 2-1-0 division) while goalie Noah Schlosser made nine saves. With the loss, the Colonials fell to 1-2-1 (1-2-0). GIRLS SOCCER

Upper Moreland 3, Cheltenham 0: Kylie West scored her first varsity goal at the 36:13 mark and the Golden Bears coasted to the SOL Freedom win on Friday. Willow Taylor scored off a dish from Brooke Lobban at the 49:32 mark and Looban finished off the scoring at the 74:25 mark on an assist from Katie Slear.

“Our league is really competitiv­e, and each team that steps onto the field is always showing up to battle and win,” UM Head Coach Lisa Benevenuto said. “Day in and day out, our players are in the grind, doing all they can to get the win. We saw that in our match-up with Springfiel­d Wednesday, and we knew that Cheltenham was going to show up as well. The loss to Springfiel­d Wednesday was tough, and we needed to regroup and learn from that experience. Today, we did a really good job at moving the ball, winning 50⁄50’s and finishing our attacks.” Hatboro-Horsham 2, Quakertown 0: Sarah Boland and Emma Levin provided the offense for the Hatters on Friday. Mia Malofiy set up both goals with a pair of assists.

Gwynedd Mercy Academy 8, MaST 0: Riley Morris collected three goals as the Monarchs took a 6-0 lead into the half and coasted to the nonconfere­nce win on Thursday. Sabrina Beniquez, Lauren Drakeley, Caroline Drakeley and Keira Cassidy also scored for GMA. Caroline Drakeley set up the offense with three assists. Ellie Verrill made one save in net, while Lynley Koschineg added two saves.

Wissahicko­n 2, Quakertown 1: Wissahicko­n got goals from Emma Greenberg and Lanna Werynski as the Trojans (3-1-0, 2-1-0 SOL Liberty) edged host Quakertown for their third straight victory.

Springfiel­d (Montco) 3, Upper Moreland 1: Kaliegh Evans had a hat trick to lead Springfiel­d to its second straight win, scoring twice in the second half after the SOL Freedom matchup was tied 1-1 at the break.

Willow Taylor gave Upper Moreland (1-2-1, 1-2-0 division) a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute off a Kyra Favors assist. Evans knotted things in the 37th minute then put the Spartans (2-1-0, 2-1-0) ahead in the 51st. Evans made it 3-1 in the 77th minute.

Hatboro-Horsham 2, PW 0: Caroline Shegogue and Alli Hewish both scored in the second half as Hatboro-Horsham shut out Plymouth Whitemarsh in the SOL Liberty matchup for a third consecutiv­e win.

Mia Malofiy and Emma Levin collected assists for the Hatters (3-0-1, 3-0-0 division). PW dropped to 1-2-0 (1-2-0). William Tennent 4, Cheltenham 0: William Tennent improved to 2-2-0 (2-1-0 SOL Freedom) with a shut out win over visiting Cheltenham (0-2-1, 0-2-1 SOL Freedom).

“They came out ready to play from the start and we struggled to find our momentum,” Cheltenham coach Leah Matusow said. “WT did the little things well today. We will learn from this game and look to get better together at practice tomorrow.”

Archbishop Wood 1, Academy Notre Dame 0: The Vikings picked up the nonconfere­nce win on Monday. Paie Eckert provided the offense off a feed from Ava DeGeorge.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Abington 3, Upper Dublin 0: The Ghosts improved to 5-0 on the season with a 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19 SOL Liberty win over the Cards on Thursday. Kenya Lucas led the way with 15 kills for Abington, while Shayla Moody added 11 kills. Also for the Ghosts, Sasha Moody added eight kills, while Mary Carter chipped in with 33 assists. Abington 3, Hatboro-Horsham 0: The Ghosts picked up their first win over the Hatters since 2017 on Tuesday, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-17/ Kenya Lucas led the way with 16 kills, while Mary Carter had 18 assists. Iris Winegard chipped in with 12 digs. BOYS GOLF

La Salle 217, Cardinal O’Hara 260: Ethan Martin and John Stevenson both shot 1-under-par 34s as the Explorers won going away on Thursday in PCL action. Jackson Fryer added a 36 for La Salle at Paxon Hollow Golf Club.

La Salle wins Holy Ghost President’s Cup Tournament: The Explorers took first on Wednesday, edging out Malvern Prep by three strokes. John Stevenson led the way with a 34, while Tyler Leyden and Kevin Lafond both carded 36s.

GIRLS WATER POLO

North Penn 9, Wissahicko­n 5: The defending state champs pulled ahead in the second to secure the win on Thursday. Wiss was paced by Maddie Johnson with three goals. Gabby Jones and Bernice Fu also scored for the Trojans. Hazel Mullen blocked 12 shots for Wiss.

BOYS WATER POLO

La Salle 9, Germantown Academy 6: Germantown Academy’s Jacob Sasson had two goals while Finn Wentz added a goal and three assists for the Patriots in their loss to La Salle.

FIELD HOCKEY

Springfiel­d Twp. 1, Lower Moreland 0: Angela Eder scored the lone goal of the game in a SOL Freedom thriller on Thursday. Emily Jackson and Emma Yoder were solid for the Spartans, helping to hold LM shotless on the day. Wissahicko­n 6, Abington 1: Riley Ball collected a hat trick as the Trojans collected the SOL Liberty win on Thursday. Sophia Havrilla set up most of the offense with three assists, while Caroline Kirkpatric­k added two goals and Kendall Crowley finished off the scoring. Camryn Stewart scored for Abington. Meredith Walsh and Ava Fell each had four saves for Wissahicko­n.

Wissahicko­n 6, Quakertown 2: Sophia Havrilla scored three goals and also had an assist as Wissahicko­n stayed undefeated with an SOL Liberty win. Ella Hummel finished with two assists while Riley Ball, Avery Mullin and Kayla Mullin each had a goal for the Trojans (4-0-0, 3-0-0 division) Faith Jampo and Kayla Park both had an assist.
