Celebrating Constitution Day

DAR organized event as part of national observance

-

NORRISTOWN >> The Towamencin chapters of Daughters of the American Revolution and Children of the American Revolution celebrated Constitution Day on Friday on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse.

Among the speakers were state Sen. Amanda Cappelletti, Lansdale Mayor Garry Herbert and Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Gale.

At 4 p.m., the courthouse bell was rung as Towamencin and 3,000 other DAR chapters rang “Bells Across America” to observe the 235th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.

The national DAR initiated the observance in 1955 when the service organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate Sept. 17—23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law in 1956.
