George E. Saurman, age 96, of Ambler, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2022 at Fort Washington Estates.

George was born in Houston, Texas on January 15, 1926 to the late Benjamin and Marcelene (Borst) Saurman. He graduated from Upper Darby High School, served with the 65th Army in Europe in WW2, and graduated from Ursinus College Cum Laude in 1950.

George led a true life of service. Over 33 years George served in local and state government as Mayor of Ambler, Pennsylvan­ia House of Representa­tives, and Ambler Borough Council including president. George was active in Ambler Kiwanis Club, Monto SAAC, Ambler Chamber of Commerce, American Cancer Society, American Trauma Society, Wissahicko­n School Authority, and Calvary United Methodist Church. George also helped to start Rising Sun Youth Services at the Ambler Theatre and the Montgomery County Senior Games.

In his retirement, George and his wife, Mary, moved to Fort Washington Estates where George became active in the community. George wrote several plays for the residents, then directed and performed in them. He wrote and published three books, “The Tale of Two Trees,” “We’ve Done Them Wrong,” and “Revisiting the Memories of Yesterday.” He became an ambassador for Shared Hope Internatio­nal. At the time he passed, George was working to improve conditions for Native Americans.

George is survived by his four married children, Nancy Ruane (Jim), Richard (Jane), George W.(Carla), and Robert (PJ); eight grandchild­ren; and nine great grandchild­ren as well as his sister-in-law, Nancy Leard. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary (Ewen) and three brothers.

George will be remembered as a servant with a loving spirit. His was a gentleman, always showing kindness, humor, and a thankful heart. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Memorial services celebratin­g George’s life will be held on Saturday October 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church located at 16 E Park Ave, Ambler, PA. Friends and family may call beginning at 10:00 a.m. An additional service will be held at Fort Washington Estates, 735 Susquehann­a Rd., Fort Washington, PA on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 PM.
