George C. Balzereit

George C. Balzereit, 98, a philanthro­pist and faithful Christian, died September 27, 2022 in Stuart Florida with his daughters by his side. He is survived by Jill (Tom) Sharp of Lansdale, PA and Barbara (Bruce) Dearnley of Maple Glen, PA He is also survived by five grandchild­ren, Brandon, Casey, Beth, Allison and Charlie and nine great grandchild­ren. He was predecease­d by his wife Marcia Levering and his brother Leo G. Balzereit. George was born on June 3, 1924 in Jefferson Hospital. He was a graduate of Jenkintown High School and served in the Navy for three years during WW II. The two subsequent years he served at the Rising Sun School of Aeronautic­s in charge of the Aircraft Instrument and Hydraulics department­s. George married his wife Marcia in 1948. They lived in Rydal, PA for most of their married life until splitting their time in Stuart, Florida and Long Beach Island, New Jersey. In 1949 he and his brother Leo started Reit Fuel Oil and Reit Supply in Abington, PA George was very active with the Abington YMCA serving as Chairman of its board of Managers and developing the “Pit Stop” for a place teenagers could gather. Mr. Balzereit was also Chairman of the Board of trustees at Grace Presbyteri­an Church and enjoyed serving as Sunday School Superinten­dent. In addition, he was president of the Abington Lions Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Jenkintown-Abington Federal Savings Bank, Trustee on the Abington Memorial Hospital Board and a member of the Delaware Valley Fuel Oil Dealers Associatio­n. George and Marcia loved their summers on LBI where he was an avid fisherman for many years. He also enjoyed the Surflight Theater and became a friend to many of the actors and actresses, inviting them for boat rides followed by dinners in their home. George and Marcia enjoyed their time in Mariner Sands, Stuart, Florida, their last residence, where they loved playing tennis, involving themselves at the Chapel as well as many other charities. In additional to his love for his family, he was devoted to making life better for so many. Towards the end of his live he was blessed to have the most wonderful caregivers who helped pursue his passion to aid others. George always said the best way he wanted to be remembered was living out his Christian faith, and making a difference in the lives of others.
