Lower Moreland girls tennis wins District 1-2A title

Girls tennis Lower Moreland 3, Merion Mercy 2:

The Lions swept the doubles matches and pulled out a thrilling match to capture the District 1-2A title on Tuesday. While the three Kideckel sisters have had stellar seasons, it was the depth that shined through on Tuesday. The No. 1 duo of Anya Yang/Lexie Moore posted a double-bagel victory over Kathryn Wert and Sarah Maloney. Then Ava Shapiro/ Catherine Lemiasheus­ki closed it out with a 6-3, 6-2win at No. 2doubles over Sarah Maloney/ Margie Perner. For good measure, senior Sarah Kideckel also posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. The best matches of the day were at the top of the lineup where Merion Mercy’s Sofia Berestetsk­a defeated Hannah Kideckel 7-5, 6-4and Ashley Gomes edged Rebecca Kideckel 3-6, 6-4, 10-3at No. 2singles. In the end, Lower Moreland advanced to the PIAA 2A Championsh­ips Oct. 28th at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Field hockey

Wissahicko­n 7, Abington 0: Riley Ball scored four goals on Friday as the Trojans improved to a perfect 17-0on the season. Caroline Kirkpatric­k added two goals, while Emma Hummel came through with a goal and an assist. Sophia Havrilla added two assists for Wissahicko­n. Nina VanEkelenb­urg and Caitlin Murcur combined for seven saves for Abington (10-5). Wissahicko­n 4, Quakertown 1: Riley Ball scored two goals and added an assist as the Trojans picked up the SOL Liberty win on Wednesday. Ella Hummel added a goal and an assist, while Kendall Crowley also scored.

Alex Bevan-Xenelis scored for Quakertown. Meredith Walsh and Ava Fell combined on five saves in net for Wiss. Julie Pizzi made 14saves for Quakertown. Springfiel­d Twp. 4, Upper Moreland 0: Norah Conlin scored two goals as the Spartans picked up the SOL Freedom win on Wednesday. Jen Rex and Gracie Bucholz also scored for Springfiel­d. Emma Yoder, Charlotte Drapkin and Gabi Maletta were credited with assists. Kennedy Braddock made one save in net for Springfiel­d.

Upper Merion 2, Pope John Paul II 1:

Rylie McGrath scored the game-winner off a corner with 1:10left as the Vikings escaped on Tuesday with the PAC Frontier win. Becca Shuler was credited with the assist. Cate Mink started the scoring with 10:54left in the contest for PJP. Ashley Evitts answered for Upper Merion a little over a minute later.

Wissahicko­n 2, Upper Dublin 1: Down 1-0entering the fourth quarter, the Trojans pulled off a dramatic SOL Liberty stunner on Monday. Both goals were scored by Sophia Havrilla, the gamewinner at 7:24off a feed from Ella Hummel. Havrilla tied the game up with 10:24 left in the contest on a penalty stroke. Upper Dublin struck in the first half when Rayla Kratchman scored off an Olivia Burdo assist. Wissahicko­n’s Meredith Walsh and Ava Fell combined for 10saves. Upper Dublin’s Camryn Muth finished with four saves.

Girls soccer

Upper Moreland 3, Springfiel­d Montco 2: The Golden Bears scored three straight goals, including Maggie Brophy’s gamewinner in the 76th minute, to beat the Spartans Thursday. Willow Taylor scored twice in the first half to dig Upper Moreland out of a 2-0 hole and tie the game. Alana Decker gave Springfiel­d the early lead and Kaleigh Evans made it 2-0. Archbishop Wood 2, ConwellEga­n 0: Maddy McCloud and Paige Eckert scored in the Vikings PCL win Thursday. Ava DeGeorge and Grace Hoeger tallied assists.

William Tennent 3, Upper Moreland 0: The Panthers took a 1-0lead into halftime and rallied for the win on Tuesday in SOL Freedom action. Theresa Ditri, Jackie Sowers and Kaitlyn Everly delivered the goals for Panthers. Erin Somerville was credited with one assist.

“We had a tough time getting into a rhythm in the first half,” UM Head Coach Lisa Benvenuto said. “We knew Tennent was going to show up tonight, not only for a rematch but also with it being their Senior Night. Throughout the game we struggled to create our offensive opportunit­ies and Tennent was able to capitalize on theirs. They played a solid game. We will regroup, and continue to learn and improve.”

Girls volleyball

Souderton 3, Mount St. Joe’s 1: The Indians (12-5) recovered from a one-set deficit to post a 23-25, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-19 win on Friday in a nonconfere­nce tilt. Standing out for Souderton were Teya McConaha (14 kills, 2 aces, 3 digs, 1 block), Alli Sauerwald (3 kills, 3 aces, 2 digs, 4 blocks), McKenna Murawski- (7kills, 1ace, 9digs), Kay Guessford (4kills, 4aces, 11digs), Grace Boyd (25assists, 1 kill) and Alexa Mazzeo (2 assists, 1 ace, 12 digs).
