BLUFFTON - Wilbur “Bill” Jack Hartmann of Bluffton, South Carolina passed away peacefully and rather suddenly after a brief stay in Hilton Head Hospital. He was 90 years old. He was predecease­d by his wife Liliane. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Colleen, also of Bluffton.

Bill was born in 1933 in Passaic, NJ to Henry William Hartmann (father) and Sadie Moore-Hartmann (mother). He was one of three brothers. Bill graduated Rutherford High School, NJ in 1951, and served with the US Army-Combat Engineers from 1953 to 1955, after which he was Honorably Discharged. Bill earned his Bachelor of Science- Industrial Engineerin­g (BSIE) from Fairleigh Dickenson University Engineerin­g School in 1964. Bill lived in Rutherford, Irvington and New Milford, NJ from 1933 to 1963. He married Liliane E. Vercautere­n in 1963 and had a son Dennis in 1967. In 1969, Bill moved his family to New Windsor NY, and lived there for 32 years.

Profession­ally, Bill held several Engineerin­g and Managerial positions in New York at Star Expansion, Western Publishing, Lorbrook Corp., and the USPS. While at Western Publishing, he was a Project Engineer who later became Manager of Direct Printing. When he retired at the end 1999, he was employed by the USPS as an Engineerin­g Manager of In-Plant Support.

Bill and Liliane retired to Sun City Hilton Head in Bluffton, SC in August of 2001. Bill became widowed in 2016 after 53-years of marriage to Liliane. He never remarried.

Bill was active in his communitie­s. He was a Manager/Coach in the New Windsor Little League (LL), and helped build the New Windsor baseball fields complex for the youths of New Windsor, NY.

In 2001, Bill and his wife Liliane moved to Sun City Hilton Head in Bluffton, SC. He was active in many community clubs, including Car Crazy, Veterans, Computer, Travel and Ballroom Dance. Bill was the first president of Car Crazy Club in 2002 and president of the Ballroom Dance club from 2004 through 2005. He was ‘Guest Program Manager’ for the Sun City Travel Club in 2012. Bill was an active volunteer in his clubs. Bill and his wife Liliane enjoyed dancing and performing on-stage as Ballroom Club guest dancers in such production­s as the “Rainbow of Rhythm” series, an annual 3-show Sun City event.

Bill was a great man; a genuinely nice, fun loving person filled with love, caring and integrity. He will be missed. He will endure in our hearts, and never be forgotten. May He Rest In Peace. Wilbur Hartmann was the BEST!

Bill’s wake will be at Sauls Funeral Home, Bluffton on Thursday, January 4, from 11am-1pm, followed by the funeral at Beaufort National Cemetery at 2pm, where he will join his wife Liliane.
