City council to meet in closed session about city attorney
The Vallejo City Council is scheduled to meet in a special closed session on Tuesday regarding the city attorney position.
Claudia Quintana notified the city in October that it was her intention to retire next April after serving as the council’s counsel for seven years. Per her employment contract with the city, Quintana was required to give six months advanced notice if she plans to retire.
“In that time, I am proud to have had the opportunity to contribute my energy and talents to defending this organization in court and providing counsel to aid you as you make policy decisions,” she wrote in a letter in October. “I have been proud to help create a more stable, more responsive organization that is committed to excellence and to increasing its response the the needs of its residents.”
Heather Ruiz, the city’s human resources director, said by email on Monday that she couldn’t comment on the specifics of the upcoming closed session discussion. She noted California law limits those type of closed session discussions to “the salaries, salary schedules, or compensation paid in the form of fringe benefits” for unrepresented employees.
Vallejo Mayor Bob Sampayan did note in October that the council would need to meet in closed session regarding Quintana’s contract after she made her announcement.
In September, the council gave Quintana a five percent raise, upping her annual salary to $219,760. That decision wasn’t unanimous as councilmen Hermie Sunga and Hakeem Brown voted against the raise.
