Stallions upset City Cats in ABA play, 108-106

The Solano Stallions hosted their first home game at Will C. Wood High School on Sunday against the San Francisco City Cats, a team that held the No. 1 spot in the American Basketball Associatio­n through Nov. 10.

With 10 seconds left to play, Vallejo native and Jesse Bethel High product Rodney Cook scored a bucket to put the Stallions over the top, 108-106. The Stallions are 1-2 on the season.

“The San Francisco City Cats are an outstandin­g basketball organizati­on,” said Stallions head coach and owner Andre Chilton. “This is a big win for the Solano Stallions and will give us confidence as we continue our season and developmen­t as a basketball organizati­on.”

Fairfield High product James Lake led the Stallions with 27 points including seven 3-pointers. Lake also led in rebounds with 10. Vaughn Canta shot 70

percent from the field and put up 17 points

Cook’s game-winner came on a drive through the middle of the lane as he put up the shot over two defenders.

“It felt good,” Cook said. “I just wanted to make sure I took care of the ball. Everyone chipped in and it was a great team effort.”

Stallions extra chances with six offensive rebounds and four defensive rebounds. He also chipped in 12 points. Lavar Nuefville scored 10 points and had six rebounds, five assists, three steals, two turnovers and a block. Cook had six assists and two steals.

The Stallions’ next game will be a rematch on the road on Dec. 7 against the City Cats at the Lincoln Center in San Francisco. Solano takes on the Contra Costa Delta Stars on Dec. 8 at Armijo High School.
