WADA says sanctions won’t hit Euro games, CL final

-

The World Anti-Doping Agency has confirmed that Russia’s hosting of European Championship soccer games next year won’t be affected by recommendations it should be banned from hosting major events.

WADA’s compliance review committee has proposed that rule as part of a package of sanctions for Russia over alleged tampering with doping records. WADA’s executive board will vote on the recommendation Dec. 9.

“As regards UEFA, the Euros is not a multi-sport major event or a world championship but rather a regional/continental single-sport event,” WADA spokesman James Fitzgerald told The Associated Press by email.

“So it is not affected by this recommendation.”

St. Petersburg is due to host four games, including a quarterfinal. The city also holds the Champions League final in 2021, another event not covered by the recommendations.

UEFA is not a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code, but Europe’s soccer governing body is a subsidiary of FIFA, which has signed up to the code. UEFA also runs its own anti-doping program.

Russia is accused of altering lab data to remove positive tests, at a time when the data was held by Russian law enforcement. Handing over the data was meant to clear up past cover-ups and smooth Russia’s way back into global sports after years doping scandals.

The WADA committee has proposed a package of sanctions including a fouryear ban on hosting major events in Russia and a similar four-year sanction on Russians competing in top events like the Olympics, though they could enter as neutrals.

BRIND'AMOUR SAYS PETERS KICKED, PUNCHED PLAYERS >> Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour has confirmed that former coach Bill Peters kicked and punched players behind

the bench during his four seasons in Carolina.

By saying “it for sure happened,” Brind’Amour increased the scrutiny on Peters, whose future as the Calgary Flames coach is in question. Peters has been benched by Calgary while the NHL and the team investigate allegations he directed racist slurs at a Nigerian-born player in the minors 10 years ago.

Peters was not behind the bench for Calgary’s game at Buffalo on Wednesday night.

Brind’Amour was an assistant on Peters’ staff, before taking over as head coach after Peters was fired following the 2017-18 season.

PIRATES HIRE SHELTON >> Derek Shelton is the new manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Shelton replaces Clint Hurdle, who was fired on the final day of the season following a second-half collapse that dropped the Pirates to a last-place finish in the NL Central.

The 49-year-old Shelton spent the last two seasons as the bench coach for the Minnesota Twins. Shelton’s previous stops include a season as the quality control coach for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017 and seven years as a hitting coach with the Tampa Bay Rays. PADRES GET DAVIES, GRISHAM FROM BREWERS FOR URÍAS, LAUER >> The Padres have acquired righthander Zach Davies and outfielder Trent Grisham from the Milwaukee Brewers for infielder Luis Urías

and left-hander Eric Lauer.

Davies was 10-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 31 starts in 2019, his fifth big league season. He made $2.6 million and is eligible for salary arbitration.

Lauer, San Diego’s opening-day starter, went 8-10 with a 4.45 ERA in his second big league season.

NCAA PUSHES BACK AGAINST MISSOURI >> The NCAA is pushing back against the University of Missouri after the school blasted the governing body for rejecting an appeal of punishments levied in the case of a rogue tutor. In a statement, the NCAA said that “while Missouri’s disappointment is understandable, the rules and infractions processes are developed by NCAA members. If any member feels the rules and penalty structure are unfair, there is a clear path for them to suggest change.”

The NCAA disciplined Missouri earlier this year after a tutor acknowledged doing course work for members of the football, baseball and softball teams. The punishment included postseason bans in each of the sports along with crippling scholarship and recruiting restrictions.

While Missouri filed a 64-page brief to the NCAA’s appeals committee in March, arguing the penalties were contrary to precedent, the appeals committee rejected those assertions Tuesday, leaving in place all the punishments put in place.

NCAA DENIES MEMPHIS' APPEAL >> Memphis center James Wiseman won’t get any reduction in his 12-game suspension.

The heralded freshman won’t be able to play again for the 16th-ranked Tigers until Jan. 12 at South Florida. Memphis issued a statement Wednesday saying that “although (this is) disappointing, we look forward to a promising season.”

The penalty surrounds the $11,500 that Memphis coach Penny Hardaway gave Wiseman’s family for moving expenses from Nashville to Memphis in the summer of 2017.
