Curry expected to start traveling with team soon

SAN FRANCISCO >> With Steph Curry back on the bench Friday, the Warriors got their first win to break a five-game losing streak. Going forward, he should be around the team a lot more.

Recovering from a broken left hand he suffered in Golden State’s Oct. 30 loss to the Suns, Curry is recently out of a cast and back with the team in San Francisco.

Curry, who hasn’t accompanied the team on the road since his injury, recently underwent a planned second procedure in Los Angeles to remove pins put into his hand in the initial surgery. If his recovery continues at this pace, he could be traveling with the team as soon as January.

“We’d like to have him with the team as much as possible,” head coach Steve Kerr said. “I haven’t talked to him about our next trip, but I’m sure he’ll be around the team more and more now that he’s allowed to be up here with our staff.

“He’s been here now the last few days, every day working with our training staff. He’s present again, so I imagine that will stay the same.”

Guard Damion Lee said several of Golden State’s eight newcomers have sought out Curry for advice in recent days.

“It’s good, just bringing that fresh spirit,” Lee said of having Curry around. “Guys can just go to him and ask him anything like he’s been here.”

On Friday, Curry was an active participant on the bench, celebrating his teammates and providing advice as needed.

“It’s just a different energy,” guard D’Angelo Russell said. “You feed off their energy. You see those guys celebrating on the sideline. They give you little nuggets at timeouts and things of that sort that reboost your confidence and keep you need it.”

Curry was at practice Sunday, and though he still can’t participate, was working on cardio and basketball movements that don’t require the use of his hand. Kerr appreciates having the two-time MVP at the facility.

“It’s nice to have him in the gym,” Kerr said. “It feels better when he’s around.”
