A big step forward

-

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, the Solano County Board of Supervisors approved my proposal to allow Home Kitchens. Basically, the program will permit persons to sell homemade food out of their homes. They will be allowed 30 meals a day, 60 meals a week and gross sales of $50,000. Those interested will need to file for a permit with the county, be certified in safe food handling and undergo an inspection.

I believe this program will bring economic opportunity to those who need it most. It will be a great way to support our military spouses in Solano County. Our military spouses face obstacles to employment and this program will provide them the ability to earn income. I also envision this program as an opportunity for entrepreneurs to gain a foot in the door in the food business. If someone is not able to open a full restaurant right now, this program could allow them an opportunity to start marketing their homemade food and gain a market.

A woman in Berkeley named Alicia Villanueva used to sell her tamales door to door. Now, she has a contract with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors to sell her tamales at the Chase Center. I hope to see success stories like this as a result of the Home Kitchens in Solano County.

The final resolution will be back before the Board in the future to create the application process. I will be providing more information as we progress.
