Cal Maritime men’s basketball team moves into second place after win

The Cal Maritime men’s basketball team defeated Simpson at home on Saturday night 68-59 to move into second place in the California Pacific Conference.

Zavier Lucero finished with 18 points five rebounds and two steals. Cetrick Yeanay and Josh Hauser each finished with 13 points and Hauser had five rebounds while dishing out four assists as he continues to inch towards the all-time assists record at Cal Maritime. Hauser has 238 career assists and is chasing Andrew Medeiros’ 267.

Simpson shot just 31 percent in the second half. Cal Maritime had a great night at the free-throw line, hitting 83 percent of its foul shots.

The game was tied at 24-24 with 5:12 to in the half but from there Simpson would use its height advantage to control the paint and the glass to go up by five at the break.

The lead would grow to eight for Simpson on multiple occasions in the second half, but Lucero and Hauser’s fadeaway jumpers and drives to the basket would set up a Trey Porter hook shot off the glass that would cut it to a one-point deficit with 12:45 to go.

Yeanay would hit a 3-pointer to give Cal Maritime a one-point lead with 9:18 remaining in the game for the Keelhauler­s first lead since they were up 2221 with 6:33 to go in the first half.

The score would be tied four more times before the Keelhauler­s would take the lead for good with 3:31 to go on a Lucero face-up jumper near the baseline. A block of a Simpson shot by Ben Borja along with he and Lucero sinking their free throws late sealed the victory for Cal Maritime in the 68-59 win.

Cal Maritime will head to La Sierra University on Thursday.

Women’s basketball

Simpson 62,

Cal Maritime 38

The Cal Maritime women’s basketball team lost to Simpson 62-38 on Saturday.

Kameron Taylor had 14 points and five 3-pointers in the loss for the Keelhauler­s, who dropped to 4-18 and 2-6 in the California Pacific Conference. Kiara Warren had seven boards.

Cal Maritime is at La Sierra on Thursday.

Girls wrestling

The Benicia High girls wrestling team took third place in the Lady of the Vine wrestling tournament over the weekend.

The Panthers Mia Bonaton took second place at the 111-pound weight class and was named outstandin­g ligthweigh­t of the tournament.

Ella Tuttle took third place at the 147-pound weight class.

Nia Cruz, Janessa Abisia and Chloe Chung all finished in fourth place in their respective weight classes.

Boys Wrestling

Benicia’s Othman takes first at San Jose Invite

The Benicia High wrestling team had some individual­s do very well at the Mission/San Jose Invitation­al on Saturday.

Basil Othman finished in first place n the 138-pound division, as he defeated the No. 13 wrestler in the state in the semifinals and the No. 1 wrestler out of Oregon in the finals.

Lorenzo Gunn took 5th at the 115-pound weight class.

Boys basketball

St. Pat’s 62, St. Mary’s 59

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys basketball team defeated St. Mary’s 62-59 in overtime on Friday in Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division play.

The Bruins (16-8, 7-1) were led 18 points from Jalen Scott and 11 points and 12 rebounds from Dishon Jackson. Esai Contreras had 10 rebounds and nine points.

St. Pat’s takes on Salesian at home on Tuesday.

American Canyon 70, Casa Grande 62

The American Canyon Wolves rebounded from their Wednesday night loss at Justin Siena with a 70-62 victory over Casa Grande on Saturday.

The game was at its closest at 57-55 late in the third but Wolves senior Paulo Tiotuyco took over in the period scoring all seven of his points in a flurry of steals, layups and a 3-pointer.

Oliver Aandahl scored a game high 27 points.

The Wolves are now 9-10 overall and 4-4 in the Vine Valley Athletic League. They host Napa High on Wednesday night.

“The kids played inspired basketball tonight. They wanted to avenge our loss from earlier in the year in their building,” American Canyon head coach Scott Hayburn said. “I’m incredibly proud of the way we responded after a tough game the other night. Paulo and Oliver, specifical­ly, were leaders tonight on the court and they have both really stepped up to be leaders off the court as well.”

Girls basketball

Casa Grande 69, American Canyon 29

The American Canyon girls basketball team lost to Casa Grande 69-29 on Saturday night in Vine Valley Athletic League play.

Jazmine Fontilla had 14 points, and Amaree Bennett had seven points.

The junior varsity girls basketball team lost to

Casa Grande, 50-48, in overtime.

Bruins win two games

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls basketball team beat California 5448 on Saturday in nonleague play and knocked off Bethel 48-31 on Friday in Tri-County Athletic League play.

In Saturday’s win, Tameiya Sadler finished with 17 points, 15 boards, seven steals, five assists and five blocks. Kayla Revelo had 14 points and seven boards and Zeni Purge had 11 points.

In the win over the Jaguars, Ariana Bide had 12 points, and Haiden McMahon had 11 points and three steals. Revelo had eight points and eight boards.

St. Pat’s (15-8, 4-3) is at El Cerrito on Friday.

Basketball

Redhawks, Jaguars games moved

The Vallejo and Bethel high school boys basketball games have changed dates and times.

The varsity boys game will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Bethel.

The varsity girls game will be at 3:30 p.m. next Monday on Feb. 10.

There will be no junior varsity or freshman games, according to the district.

College baseball

San Mateo 14, Solano 2

The Solano College baseball team lost a game to San Mateo on Saturday 14-2 in nonleague play.

The Falcons (2-2) collected just five hits, with two of them coming from Wellington Balsley and two more coming from Nathan Jessell. Cameron Martin had two walks.

Taking the loss on the mound was Brandon Herter, who gave up three earned runs in two innings. He walked three.

Solano’s next game is Thursday against Sierra.
