Cal Maritime hoops loses to Antelope Valley in overtime

The Cal Maritime men’s basketball let a late lead slip away Saturday night as the Keelhauler­s fell to No. 17 Antelope Valley 81-70.

Vallejo’s Zavier Lucero had himself another double-double with 24 points, 11 rebounds for the Keelhauler­s. Ben Borja added 13 points of his own with four boards along with Cetrick Yeanay pitching in 13 points with six rebounds and four assists.

Both teams struggled in the first half offensivel­y, not finding a rhythm and missing open shots. The Keelhauler­s broke out for a 5-0 run to start the game with a bucket from Lucero on a cut toward the basket initiating the scoring. The Pioneers missed on their first four possession­s but turned things around quick getting a lead midway through the first half 22-15.

Cal Maritime would make the necessary adjustment­s at halftime, looking to make a statement against the top seeded Pioneers retaking the lead on a 13-2 run making it a 35-28 game.

Yeanay on the following Keelhauler possession would nail a 3-pointer from the corner to answer back and re-gain the lead for Cal Maritime. The Pioneers scored on their next possession, making it 62-61.

Following a pair of free throws from Yeanay, he would get called for a foul on Ronnie Rousseau of the Pioneers on their ensuing possession while shooting a three. Rousseau would hit all three free throws to tie the game with four seconds left and eventually sending it to overtime 66-66.

Rousseau and fellow Pioneer guard Ruben Gonzalez would each hit a three on back to back possession­s for the Pioneers, sealing the win for Antelope Valley.

Cal Maritime (18-6, 6-4 in the California Pacific Conference) will finish on the road for the year taking on Pacific Union (8-13, 5-5) in Angwin on Thursday.

Women’s basketball

Antelope Valley 86, Cal Maritime 46

The Cal Maritime women’s basketball team lost to Antelope Valley 86-46 on Saturday.

The Keelhauler­s were led in the loss by Bethel High graduate Elizabeth Martinez, who had 14 points and four rebounds. Apollonia Ilalio had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Tyra Fai’malo had nine rebounds.

The Keelhauler­s fell to 4-20 overall and 2-8 in the California Pacific Conference with the loss.

College softball

Solano splits games

The Solano College softball team split a doublehead­er on Saturday, winning the second game 7-3 against Shasta after falling in the first game to Sequoias 11-4.

Breyon Fullard had two hits and three RBIs for the Falcons (1-3) in the first game. Hailey Enriquez had a double, while Lyndsey Urricelqui had a hit and scored two runs.

Ari McIntyre earned the win for Solano by going 6 1/3 innings and giving up seven hits.

Against Sequoias, Solano was led by Steele Shumway , Enriquez and Urricelqui, who all had two hits.

Solano is at Diablo Valley College on Tuesday. The Falcons face DVC at 10 a.m. and Feather River around noon.

Girls basketball

Salesian 52, St. Pat’s 37

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls basketball team lost to Salesian on the road Saturday 52-37.

Anisa Rillo scored 16 points for the Pride.

The Bruins fell to 17-9 and 6-4 in the Tri-County Athletic League with the loss.

Track and Field Vallejo’s Evans places first in triple jump

Vallejo High track star Sameerah Evans competed at the California Winter Track and Field Championsh­ips this weekend took first place in the triple jump.

Evan’s leap at Arcadia High was 39 feet, 3 inches. Twenty-three other girls competed in the event.
