Donations rise for the family of 4-year-old killed in hit-and-run

RICHMOND >> An online fundraiser for the family of a 4-year-old boy killed in a hit-and-run crash last week has raised more than $10,000.

The memorial fund for the boy, identified in the fundraiser as Heitor Carreiro, had raised about $12,200 by 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Heitor died from his injuries after being hit by a car in the 2200 block of Coalinga Avenue on Feb. 7.

Heitor was standing with his father, who was unloading groceries near their home, when the collision happened, police said. An SUV came around the corner around 5 p.m., hit the boy, and kept going, police said.

Medics airlifted Heitor to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland following the collision, but he died there.

“Heitor was an energetic kid, always with a big smile,” according to his father, Mauro, who was the organizer of the fundraising page. “It is a devastating event that his parents and sister had to witness his incident and death. A family should never experience the loss of a child at a young age.”

Terrell O. Richardson, 26, surrendered to police Sunday and was booked on suspicion of felony hit-andrun. He remained in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility on Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Authorities had until the end of the business day Thursday to file formal charges.

The family is seeking donations to cover his medical and funeral costs.
