Cal Mar­itime host­ing women lead­er­ship con­fer­ence

Cal­i­for­nia State Univer­sity Mar­itime Academy’s an­nual Women in Mar­itime Lead­er­ship Con­fer­ence re­turns this month with sev­eral notable women pre­sent­ing in var­i­ous top­ics, ac­cord­ing to a univer­sity news re­lease.

The ninth an­nual con­fer­ence is set for Feb. 2829 on the univer­sity’s cam­pus, 200 Mar­itime Academy Drive in Vallejo.

Open to all, the event will fea­ture pro­gram­ming for col­lege stu­dents, re­cent grad­u­ates, and pro­fes­sion­als. Women in Mar­itime Lead­er­ship of­fers op­por­tu­ni­ties for lead­er­ship de­vel­op­ment and pro­duc­tive net­work­ing for women in mar­itime and re­lated fields and those who sup­port them, univer­sity of­fi­cials said. The con­fer­ence of­fers a ro­bust pro­gram on mar­itime cul­ture and trends, the many facets of lead­er­ship, and de­vel­op­ing self and oth­ers on a team.

Pre­sen­ters in­clude:

Pati Navalta Poblete, a long­time Bay Area jour­nal­ist, who pre­vi­ously served as edi­to­rial writer and colum­nist for The San Fran­cisco Chron­i­cle, where she was twice nom­i­nated for the Pulitzer Prize. Poblete later worked as Asia re­gional direc­tor for Global Foot­print Net­work, an in­ter­na­tional or­ga­ni­za­tion that works with gov­ern­ments and agencies to shape sus­tain­abil­ity poli­cies.

She is cur­rently the founder and ex­ec­u­tive direc­tor of the Robby Poblete Foundation, a non­profit or­ga­ni­za­tion named for her son who was killed in 2014. The foundation’s mis­sion is to re­duce gun vi­o­lence through buy­back pro­grams, trans­form­ing the weapons into in­stru­ments of hope and op­por­tu­nity through art and vo­ca­tional pro­gram­ming.

Ally Ce­deno is the founder and pres­i­dent of the Women Off­shore Foundation, an on­line or­ga­ni­za­tion and re­source cen­ter for a di­verse work­force on the wa­ter — pro­vid­ing re­sources to fos­ter long-term ca­reers and shar­ing the lat­est on gen­der di­ver­sity and in­clu­sion in the off­shore and mar­itime in­dus­tries.

Piya Kishore, a se­nior hu­man re­sources busi­ness part­ner for LinkedIn, will also speak at the con­fer­ence.

Other pre­sen­ters in­clude Gla­dys Diva Brown, air­port direc­tor at Yuma In­ter­na­tional and a grad­u­ate of Cal Mar­itime, and Betsy Strines, a 25-year vet­eran of the U.S. Air Force. Strines is a lead­er­ship de­vel­op­ment con­sul­tant with the Lead­er­ship Foundry.
