Sharks trade Marleau, Goodrow

Even after Patrick Marleau signed with the Sharks in October, there was always a small chance he could be traded if the season didn’t go as planned.

It happened Monday, as Marleau was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional 2021 third round draft pick.

Per Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic, the third round pick becomes a second round selection if Pittsburgh wins the Stanley Cup this season. The NHL trade deadline was Monday at noon (PT).

With the Sharks’ chances of reaching the playoffs at almost nil, the deal gives Marleau the opportunity to chase his first Stanley Cup championship. The Penguins are second in the Metropolitan Division with a 3718-6 record.

“Patrick is one of the most iconic players to ever wear the Sharks uniform,” Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. “Although we

have had a disappointing season in San Jose, he deserves every opportunity to have a chance at winning a Stanley Cup, and we’re happy to help accommodate that. We wish him the best of luck.”

It won’t take long for Marleau to see his former team, as the Penguins play at SAP Center against the Sharks on Saturday.

“Patrick is a player who can play anywhere in our lineup,” Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said in a team release.

“He’s a good two-way player, provides leadership and will be a good fit with our team.”

Marleau, 40, signed a one-year contract with the Sharks on Oct. 9, returning to the team where he started and played the first 19 years of his NHL career. His deal did not carry any trade protection, although it is believed Wilson gave Marleau the courtesy of asking him about moving to another team before completing a trade.
