Cal Maritime men’s hoops to start Cal-Pac playoffs Saturday,

The Cal Maritime men’s basketball team will start the California Pacific Conference playoffs on Saturday.

The Keelhaulers are the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will face off against No. 2 UC Merced at 7:30 p.m. in Lancaster. The first semifinal is top-seeded Antelope Valley against No. 4 Simpson at 5 p.m.

All games, including the championship contest on Monday, will take place at Antelope Valley’s Pioneer Events Center in Lancaster.

Antelope Valley (25-4 140) enters the tournament on a record 16-game winning streak, running the table in the Cal-Pac for just the second time in league history. Should the Pioneers manage to capture the tourney title, their 27 wins would also match the all-time league best (Cal Maritime 2014, Dominican 2005).

The Pioneers are facing a Simpson (15-11, 7-7) team which they swept in the regular season by a combined 65 points and have beaten six straight times.

UC Merced (17-9, 9-5) and Cal Maritime (20-8, 8-6) will meet in the second semi. The Bobcats swept the Keelhaulers during the regular season, and are looking to get back to the Cal-Pac finals for the first time since a one-point loss to Antelope Valley in Vallejo in 2018.

The second matchup between Cal Maritime and Merced was a classic as Merced freshman Justin Nguyen had a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds was the game-winner in a 75-72 win. The Keelhaulers needed a 12-0 run late in the second half to tie the game.

The Keelhaulers are back in the semis, and sports their sixth 20-win season since 2012. This tournament marks the first time the CalPac has had a pair of 20-win teams in over 15 years.

The winner of the conference tournament advances to the NAIA nationals in Sioux Falls, S.D. Antelope Valley has won the last two tournament titles.
