A Fairfield man was killed in the second of two collisions on Westbound Interstate 80 Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Solanoarea office.

The deceased was identified by the Solano County Coroner’s Office as Luis Perez-Vazquez, 34, of Fairfield.

At approximately 8:51 p.m., Solano-area CHP units were notified CHP dispatchers of a traffic collision with possible injuries on westbound I-80 east of Travis Boulevard in Fairfield. As they were responding, officers received notification of a pedestrian down in the No. 1 lane on the eastbound side of I-80 which officers believe was associated with the original collision.

The initial collision involved three vehicles. PerezVazquez was reported to have been driving erratically before the collision and ended up striking another vehicle before colliding with the center median concrete barrier wall, the CHP said. After the collision, Perez-Vazquez got out of his vehicle and was hit by another vehicle, which ejected him into the eastbound lane where he was struck by several additional vehicles.

At 9:04 p.m., medical personnel pronounced PerezVazquez dead at the scene.

Only one driver involved in the eastbound collision was located and contacted by officers. She and a driver in the initial westbound collision were cooperating with investigating officers, the CHP reported. Neither driver was arrested, and both had their seatbelts on.

The CHP believes that Perez-Vazquez may have been driving under the influence and that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The case remains under investigation.
